Toronto newcomers Dear Pressure swept us off our feet with their song 'by number’ a month ago, reminding us of Sir Sly, The Neighbourhood, slenderbodies, and even Mansionair in the process with their sooty slink and muggy electro ambiance on the song. The group has since returned with their excellent debut EP, ‘swimdrown’, a four song collection that includes ‘by number’ and three other stellar cuts. Let’s take in their dreamy indie electro and alt pop on ‘stateside’ today. Groove out to its gooey, dusky shuffle, so sultry seductive yet laid back and atmospheric. The band states of their EP: "'swimdrown' owes its inspiration to the juxtaposition of news events with events in one's personal life - the synchronicity between one's natural and social environment and one's personal relationships. It explores the moments in life when everything feels like its closing in - when the news cycle seems to exactly parallel the events you're currently dealing with in life. We really felt that way during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. That was when the seeds of the project were planted for us. From there, it was really about figuring out how to ask the right questions and navigate that space. In many ways, it asks many more questions than it gives answers."
They continue: “Sonically, it's also open ended and it serves as a sample of all the musical styles we hope to explore in the future. One thing that became clear to us is that staying where you are isn't an option. Being idle is the same thing as moving backwards on both a micro and macro scale. We want to keep moving forward both musically and otherwise.” Stream Dear Pressure’s Swimdrown project in full on Spotify, here.
