Gender and Identity Workshop

We looked at how gender affects advertising, as well as how to draw away from the concept of gender marketing. I knew a lot of the issues raised in this tutorial but I didn’t know some of the theories so that aspect was useful. We were given a tag to analyse as well and view with a gendered point of view, showing how large an impact gender marketing actually has on society. However, I chose the rather feminine underwear tag as I liked how tracing paper was used to add decoration to the main tag.

Our final task was to create a tag that represented out identity and I loved the gold and blue patterned paper so I chose to use that first. The pink paper I initially took as it complemented the blues very well, then I saw the slightly torn edge and I really liked the style that gave so I tried to do it all the way around. The L on the back symbolises one of my initials and I added the blue bow for a little extra something. Overall I made most of my decisions for this as I liked them, the original brief being to create something that represents our identity and sense of self yet I feel my decisions do represent my sense of self as they are things I find aesthetically pleasing, therefore representing my personality.
