With melted Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, tangy sauce, and juicy beef patties between two slices of toasted rye bread, this is the classic recipe.
Ingredients: 1/2 lb ground beef. Salt and pepper to taste. 4 slices rye bread. 4 slices Swiss cheese. 1 onion, thinly sliced. 2 tablespoons butter, divided. 2 tablespoons mayonnaise. 2 tablespoons ketchup. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce.
Instructions: Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into 2 patties. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties to your desired doneness, about 4-5 minutes per side for medium. In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook the sliced onions until caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside. Wipe out the skillet and place it back on the heat. Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place one slice of bread, mayonnaise side down, in the skillet. Top with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and finally another slice of rye bread, mayonnaise side up. Cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make the second sandwich. In a small bowl, mix together ketchup and Worcestershire sauce to make a dipping sauce. Slice the sandwiches diagonally and serve hot with the dipping sauce.
