Buffalo Beano opened in 1968 on 8th Street and University as a local Lubbock retailer specializing in kites, skateboards, jewelry, and urban décor. The business was owned and operated by Gary and Karen King for over 30 years until the building was condemned by the city and bulldozed in 2004.

Though the Southwest Collection is closed today for Emancipation Day, we wanted to entice you to visit the Southwest Collection’s building on Monday to view the Southwest Music Archive’s permanent exhibit. Featured here is a Roman Teller Violin crafted in 1965 that was used by Lubbock educator of 25 years, J.T. Braxton.

“Gardyloo” was a folk music fanzine launched in April 1959 by writer and editor Lee Hoffman. Features centered around the folk scene in New York’s Greenwich Village, promoting local musicians unique to the area. The etymology of the title is derived from the French “garde à l’eau,” meaning “take heed of the water.” The meaning morphed in the medieval period where residents in crowded areas would call out “Gardyloo” as a warning cry “before one dumped a bucket of slop out of an upstairs window.” Though Hoffman believed her words were akin to dumping slop on the masses, post “Gardyloo,” she wrote more than twenty science fiction and western novels and earned several awards for her work.

Meet Kylie! She’s an Archivist for the Southwest Collection and Southwest Music Archive. When she’s not running around the building, she’s conducting oral histories with SWMA musicians.

“I initially became an archivist because I was thrilled with the idea of providing a clear organization and structure to manuscript collections. Now, I’m additionally extremely passionate about fostering relationships with our SWMA artists and music enthusiasts to further bridge the gaps in our collections, so researchers have the full scope of those who contributed to Lubbock's sound."

Though we spend most of our days with CDs, vinyl records, and cassette tapes, other artifacts are not uncommon. To preserve photographs, we use mylar sleeves sized specially for the object; these images here showcase several negatives and slides in mylar sleeves with identifying information labeled using one of our archival pens (in case any writing needs to be reversed). All artifacts are also placed in boxes wrapped securely in acid-free tissue paper. These are just a few examples of how we preserve objects in SWMA!

To continue our preservation month posts, we are highlighting the Southwest Collection’s building with some historic photos from its construction in 1997. We are extremely grateful to have an entire building to house our collections and will be excited to celebrate our 30th anniversary next year!

In 1991, Don Caldwell, a Lubbock recording studio legend and founder of Broadway Festivals Inc., started 4th on Broadway. This event was Lubbock’s large Independence Day celebration on Broadway St., which included parades, food, music, and fireworks. For 34 years, Caldwell served as the host until his passing in 2024. After Caldwell’s death and the closing of Broadway Festivals Inc., Civic Lubbock stepped in to manage the celebrations in an effort to continue Caldwell’s legacy and maintain Lubbock’s Independence Day festivities.

We have pins in abundance throughout our collections, and they are some of our coolest objects. These various pins are from Steve Maines—a well-known musician belonging to The Maines Brothers Band.
