He’d been drunk once, his father overpouring him when he’d been ten, laughing and cajoling his son to drink properly like a man. He hadn’t liked it.
Fools overdrink, lose control and make asses of themselves. A gentleman shows restraint.
Ming Fan, who Zhao De has always almost fondly known to be a fool, promptly takes a deep swig of his wine as if in argument. His eyes squeeze shut, his throat working, and Zhao De impulsively reaches forward and ever so lightly pushes the bottle up by the bottom with just a finger. Ming Fan makes a strained noise and seems to almost choke, struggling to keep drinking instead of making a mess of himself. He bats at Zhao De with his free hand, who ignores him for just two more seconds before removing his hand, laughing lightheartedly.
“Zh-- Zhao-shidi,” Ming Fan rasps out once he’s coughed a little, lowering his bottle. His eyes are a little teary with strain, and some wine had spilled from his mouth down his chin.
“Sorry, couldn’t resist,” Zhao De says unapologetically, then reaches forward and thumbs away the wine on Ming Fan’s chin. “You just drink so slowly!”
