Translation: Tales of Destiny 「What is a Swordian?」

Swordians were developed as a trump card to end the Aeth’er Wars. It produced a threatening energy that far exceeded the power people are capable of alone, and also had disguised the dangerous ability to consume one’s heart, which made it a double-edged sword.

Swordians as a counter to Aeth’er weapons

Swordians are sword-shaped weapons developed for the decisive battle in the years-long Aeth’er Wars. It’s possible to use it just as a sword, but contained within it is a “Core Crystal,” a very dense Lens with a personality imbued into it. Within the Core Crystal holds the personality and memories of the Swordian’s master, giving them both the ability to communicate and a high level of resonance with one another. This allows for an amplification of the Core Crystal’s energy, and makes it possible to use powerful magic artes. Because of the ability to communicate, if used in hand-to-hand combat, Swordians have combat ability that is much higher than that of a normal sword.

It was the genius scientist of the Er’ther Army, Dr. Harold Berselius, who proposed this theory. However, though the theory behind it was perfect, it was unprecedented to imbue a personality into a sword and required the cooperation of other people in order to make such a technological advancement viable. This was a problem, as the there were an inadequate number of scientists that were left with the Er’ther troops; It wasn’t until they received help from the defected Belcrant Development team that the plan began to bear fruit. It was then decided in that was that six Swordians would be born into the world.

The six Swordians and their Core Crystal also served as a means of destruction for the Eye of God, thanks to their special structure and ability to resonate with it as well. They were not able to achieve this goal however, as during the decisive battle of the Aeth’er Wars, the Swordian Berselius was lost. It was because of that the destruction of the Eye of God was said to be impossible, even if it had been previously stated otherwise.

Swordian Masters

In order to utilize power from the Core Crystal, a Swordian must be used by someone of a special nature, called a Swordian Master. This isn’t influenced solely by the mysterious Lens energy, but by the fact that they hold the personalities of the the six original masters. At the time of the Aeth’er Wars, this came with the reason that both Swordian and Master were the same; because of this, the idea of a third-party user wasn’t taken into account since it was assumed there would be no other Masters.

Even though as time passed and the original Masters were no longer around, the Swordians were handed down, and at times there have been other people capable—those who have appeared with the qualities of a Swordian Master. One can only guess what “special qualities” these people actually have. It’s assumed that it’s due to the similar mentalities they have with the original selves, but the detailed reasoning is something unknown to even the Swordians. However, since Clemente says that “a bright, youthful young lady is ideal,” it seems there is a certain degree of personal selection in the process.

Dangers of there being a “personality”

It’s the Swordians purpose to possess a personality in order to communicate with fellow Swordians, it’s Master, as well as to exchange in conversation with other Swordian Masters. However, it’s only those with the quality of a Swordian Master who can sense the Swordians; it’s difficult enough for most people to even be able to hear the Swordians, let alone recognize that they can project their personalities.

The nature of the Swordians is one that is filled with paradoxes. When the personality of Swordian and Master are completely in-tune, the mind of the Master and Swordian alike will mirror each other; another way of putting it would be that the there is a state of being “another oneself” for the original that can can occur. As a figurative example, it can talk or ask a question introspectively and still be understood. However, if another Swordian Master were to borrow the sword, it would exist as a separately—only as a “personality” of the original. Something like this wasn’t originally supposed to be possible, and in pointing out this out and giving it self-awareness, there’s danger in a gestalt collapse occurring.

Up until the end of the war, there was no serious discussion of this issue. The time from the completion of the Swordians to the fall of the Aeth’erian army was just only just one day; with the strategy being carried out so hastily, there hadn’t been any time to consider the long-term metal effects. Following the cease-fire, there still hadn’t been time to address problems with the personalities and so-on with the Swordians, and it was left to be dealt with later. However, during the reconstruction process, the signs of the Swordian paradox began to appear, exceedingly serious with the passage of time. For example, when both parties, Master and Swordian are too assertive, their minds become unable to synchronize and there is a dissonance in their wavelengths. If any problem arises from this, there’s a risk of causing the Master’s personality to break down and collapse.

Although it let to their victory in the Aeth’er Wars, the Swordians also came to be the symbol of a bloody battle. With the lives of the Masters being top priority, the Swordians were frozen in time, disposed of by being dispersed throughout the world. With the deaths of the original members, “the existence of the complete sympathizers” was completely lost from the Er’ther Lands.
