You were heartbroken. As often as you and your boyfriend had your ups and downs, you had never anticipated a breakup. Somehow, you always thought you would make it work. You thought the two of you could get through anything...but you were wrong. No more than ten minutes ago he came over and ended your relationship abruptly and aggressively.
Maybe he wasn't right for me. Maybe Draken was right.
Draken.
God, there was no one you wanted to talk to more than him right now...even though you knew you wouldn't like what he had to say. But it didn't matter. Before you could think twice about it you pulled out your phone and shot him a text. Seconds passed before your phone lit up with response.
Draken was right, of course. When wasn't he? He always seemed to know what you needed before you were even aware. That was a quality your ex had never been able to learn and embrace.
Where are you taking me?
You texted back quickly before you could talk yourself out of it and talk yourself into a night of self loathing and crying yourself to sleep. Draken texted you back just as fast.
You'll see
No more than ten minutes passed before Draken was at your door with two helmets in hand and a smile so bright it almost burned...but it burned in a way you had needed so desperately. You needed to be around his optimism right now. You needed to absorb it.
"For you." He said, placing one of the helmets in your hands. He brought his bike today. That's how you knew he felt sorry for you. Draken knew how much you loved his bike. He was hesitant to let you ride it. He was always worried about your safety. But he brought it out anyway, because you needed it today.
He walked you out from your patio to his bike, holding out a hand to help stabilize you as you hopped on. He slid onto the bike in front of you once you were seated, then grabbed your hands and put them tightly around his waist.
"Hold on. Don't let go." He said, and Draken peeled out of the driveway with lightning speed.
You watched the city buzz past. The bright lights and the breeze in the air were nighttime in Japan at its best, and you were soaking it all in as you felt the tears run down your face. You needed this. Draken knew you needed this. He always knew what you needed, and he continued to prove that as he pulled into the parking lot of your favorite bar and parked.
"I know maybe a bar isn't the right move immediately after a breakup but I thought-"
"No, Ken. It's perfect. This sounds like the perfect night."
Draken hopped off the bike. He held your hand as you got off, and didn't let go until the two of you were inside and sitting at the bar top, where you both ordered a drink and a basket of fries to share.
"He never took me here, ya know?" You said, grabbing another handful of fries from the basket, "He didn't like it when I'd come here either."
You turned to Draken and saw the look of disgust on his face, "That figures. He never let you do anything you actually liked. It was always so hard to get you out of the house when he was around. 'Made me sick to think about."
"Thinking about what?"
Draken turned away, "To think about you stuck at home with him, wasting away. That's not you. That's never been you."
Draken was right. Your ex didn't like it when you weren't with him. Any time with friends was limited, and time with Ken specifically was practically non-existent. He didn't like Ken. He never had.
"I think that's why he didn't like me coming here. Because, ya know, this was kind of....our place. You know, me and you."
Ken smiled, "He never did like me, did he?"
"Well you didn't give him much reason too, Ken." You said with a laugh, "You hated him too."
"I-I didn't hate him, really. I just hated how he treated you."
The two of you went quiet for a while, both lost in thought about the time that you'd lost together, the time you wasted with your ex, the time you'd never get back now. And Ken was right, as always. Your ex wasn't so bad at first. He was funny and he was talented and charismatic. But after a few months that faded away and the person you had fallen for became much colder and closed off and bitter.
Draken took another long drink of his beer and, faintly, you heard him say, "I never would have treated you like that."
"W-What did you say?"
Ken's eyes widened. He must of thought he was quiet enough that you wouldn't hear him. He must of thought the bar was just loud enough to drown out his voice. But he was wrong. You heard every word, but you needed to hear him say it again, louder this time.
Draken cleared his throat, squirming in his seat until he sitting up nice and tall, "I-I said that I- Well, if I had a chance with you I wouldn't have treated you like that. I wouldn't have hidden you away."
Somehow it had never occurred to you that maybe, after all this time, Draken had seen himself as something more than your friend. And, even now, you could have convinced yourself that he didn't, that he was just your friend and that he wanted nothing more than that. But you had never seen Draken nervous before, and right now he was sweating bullets and he was tripping over his words. But his eyes - they never wavered from yours. They were steady and strong, like he was trying to convey something deeper to you within his gaze.
You leaned in closer, a sudden wave of confidence coming over you, "And what would you have done, if I was yours?"
For a moment, Draken remained nervous. His eyes wandered over you, as if he was waiting for the punchline, as if he thought this was all a dream. And then, he leaned in close too and smiled, "Whatever you wanted me to. I would have done anything for you."
You leaned back, grabbing your glass and downing the rest of your drink. If you were going to do this with Draken, you needed more liquid courage.
You set your emptied glass down and pushed it away, and your gaze went back to Draken. He was smirking. There was a sparkle in his eyes you hadn't seen in him in a long time. This really was something he had wanted. How long had he wanted you? How long had this feeling gone unspoken?
"Do you want that chance? With me?" You asked, your voice coming out softener than you had wanted it to. The liquid courage wasn't working, and his allure was beginning to make you nervous.
Draken leaned in closer than before, his lips practically brushing against your ear. His voice was deep and low as he spoke, "I need you. I have for a long time."
Your heart began to race as Draken's hand caressed your cheek, brushing your hair behind your ear, "I wouldn't mess up with a chance like that."
Slowly, his hands lowered from your face down to the legs of your chair. Quickly, he pulled until your chair was so close to his they were practically touching.
"And I promise," he continued, his hands moving inward, making their way up to your knees and to your thighs, "I would make you feel so happy, if you would let me."
"Then maybe I should give you that chance." You said, your voice coming down to a whisper. He was so close now, you didn't need to speak louder to be heard.
Ken smiled and grabbed your helmet from the bar, placing it in your hands again, letting his hands graze over yours before he let go, "Then let's go home so I can make good on my promise."
