On Sunday I went to see the amazing @sarahmaguire in "The Becoming" by Katie Pollock at the New Theatre. Based on a novella by Franz Kafka, the play explores how we react to and deal with change. The idea of change is everywhere in this play, and using the examples of extremism and eco terrorism, the play explores the dynamic of one family and how they react to and understand their increasingly dangerous environment. Eh, that's what I got from it. Open to interpretation!! Sarah was wonderful, leading the plot as the main character and keeping the story moving. It's an interesting play, where the main character really isn't the main character and simply is on stage the most rather than being the focus of the play. And Sarah was generous, giving the others their time and playing opposite them in whatever style was needed. Thank you for inviting me Sarah. On Friday we got to see the lovely @alanaletbirt in "Revolt. She Said Revolt Again" in the Living Room at Erskineville Town Hall. What an incredible piece of visceral, feminist theatre that provided an open commentary of women in our society. Featuring a cast and crew of female and non-binary identifying humans, they explored the role and place of women in different situations, and how any small step outside the norm can be seen as rebellious. Well. It's open to interpretation ok?! I especially liked that they touched on how women are affected by the he actions of others and the rules of behaviour that gave been set for them to follow; and that they used these examples to question how women are viewed by us today. Alanie was wonderful, and is an incredibly versatile actor, being able to seamlessly move from playing a strong, open and relaxed woman who isn't afraid to ask be direct and for what she wants, to a more gentle, nuanced, and perfectly timed portrayal of a young girl struggling to understand her environment due to disability.
