Symbolic Interaction

A Micro-level theory; sees society as the product of the everyday interactions of individuals

According to Symbolic Interaction, social structures and functions do not shape society (functionalist perspective), inequality does not shape society (conflict perspective), rather, social interaction shapes society. Main Points of Focus:

Symbols are the foundation of society

Symbols are the meanings we attach to things; we attach meaning to everything: words, gestures, dates, etc. Does July 4th mean something different than July 5th? Why?

We construct meanings and then interact with others based on those meanings

How likely are you to swear in front of your grandmother? Your buddy? Why, what’s the difference? The difference is in the meaning associated with the two different people. You (probably) have a different relationship with your grandmother than you do with your pals

Meanings are learned through interaction with others

Symbols are leaned…you weren’t born with the knowledge that July 4th is a national holiday in the US.

Reality is subjective

Points of view and behavior are influenced by interaction with others; reality is perception

Society is basically nothing more than people interacting – and constructing their own realities

Our identity or sense of self is shaped through social interaction

We develop our self concept by observing how others interact with us and label us; by observing how others define us, we define ourselves.
