Today we celebrate our Venerable Father Symeon the New Theologian. Saint Symeon was a monk in the 11th Century whose writings heavily influenced the hesychastic movement in the 14th Century. He is one of only three saints in the entire Eastern Orthodox Church to be granted the title of “Theologian”, not in the academic sense, but rather in actual spirituality. Saint Symeon reposed on March 12 but since this falls during Great Lent, his feast is transferred to October 12. May he intercede for us always + #saint #symeon #new #theologian #hesychasm #hesychast #monk #orthodox #saintoftheday (at Marmara, Balikesir, Turkey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjlW8OaLAaK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
The Fire rises in me
The fire rises in me,
and lights up my heart.
Like the sun!
Like the golden disk!
Opening, expanding, radiant --
Yes!
-- a flame!
I say again:
I don't know
what to say!
I'd fall silent
-- If only I could --
but this marvel
makes my heart leap,
it leaves me open mouthed
like a fool,
urging me
to summon words
from my silence.
Symeon
Knowing God through Logic
For if the recognition of true wisdom and the knowledge of God were to be given to us through letters and studies, brothers, what need would there be then for faith or for divine Baptism or for the Communion of His Mysteries?
None.
But because the world through its wisdom did not know God, it pleased God, it says, to save those who believe through the foolishness of the message preached (I Corinthians 1:21)
-Saint Symeon the New Theologian
Today we celebrate the Presentation of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ to the Temple 40 days after His birth. Lady full of grace, rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, for Christ our God, the Sun of righteousness has risen from you and He illumined those in darkness. And you, righteous Elder, be glad in heart, receiving in your embraces the One who liberates our souls and bestows on us the Resurrection. #presentation #temple #ypapanti #symeon #elder #theotokos #orthodox (at Jerusalem Palestine) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZcmQsjvk7R/?utm_medium=tumblr
Today we celebrate the memory of the Holy Ascetic and Fool-for-Christ Symeon. Saint Symeon became a monk in the desert when travelling throughout the Holy Lands and venerating the Holy Sites. After many years in the desert, he felt the calling to go into the world to help his fellow people. In order not to be commended for his work, he took on the guise of a fool for which he was treated poorly by most, but respected dearly by a select few who knew his degree of virtue. A few days before his death, he was informed in a vision of his departure from this life, and so he secluded himself in a cell where he spent his last days in prayer and solitude.
