You know that feeling when a short story you read in English Class gives you an idea for your own sci-fi story...
so obviously you have to write it...
so obviously you have to make a conlang for the aliens (I mean, how else are you gonna give them names?)...
so obviously you then have to make a font for their writing system and mess around with coding to get the software to do the conversion between pronunciation and romanization and your writing system correctly...
so obviously by this point you may as well translate what you've written of the sci-fi story thus far into the language...
so obviously you make a syntax tree for it...
... yeah. Same here.
hello tumblr linguistics i need some help
ive been trying to make syntax trees for more complicated sentences so ive been practicing with quotes and they make me want to cry. Any chance someone can point me in a direction to figure out how to deal with the “which” in the Tolkien quote “i love only that which they defend”? Thanks 😭
Syntax 2 - Trees: Crash Course Linguistics #4
There are many theories of syntax and different ways to represent grammatical structures, but one of the simplest is tree structure diagrams! In this episode of Crash Course Linguistics, we’ll use tree structure diagrams to keep track of words and groups of words within sentences, and we’ll break down what roles different types of words and phrases play within a sentence.
For more resources on syntax, including practice puzzles with trees and bracketing phrases from the linguistics olympiads (with answer keys), check out this week’s issue of Mutual Intelligibility.
For those struggling with syntax trees
Practice with song lyrics! Put your music on shuffle, pick out a sentence and try drawing the syntax tree for it
You run into a problem? Try analysing what part of the sentence is making problems, maybe you haven't learned that structure yet or have to revise it once more
oh boy oh boy oh boy i get to start making syntactic trees in my class soon who hype
Tortured my syntax students a little bit this morning 😂
