‘Birthday’
God.. He wasn’t sure how he felt for that word. To much time trying to make due with what he could, a birthday cake wasn’t really on the necessity list, nor the acknowledgment of the ‘special’ day. As much as he would of enjoyed it, it just wasn’t viable. Besides, who’d be there to enjoy it with him? Really couldn’t go to mom.. To many questions, many answers he didn’t wanna give her. Sure, he sent a card every now and then for mothers day, always whatever money he could for her. And dad... Well yeah. But... Birthdays... It just didn’t seem important... He could recall one though, just a few years after he met Finnick, when he was still heavily reliant on the Fennec.
The fox bought him a small cupcake, with a little lit candle on top. It was right after they worked out their whole pawpsicle con. He was 21 at the time... It was more than a little unexpected. Brought him to tears, to say the least. It was the first time in a long time he ever received anything at all for his birthday. He had grown so dull to the idea of it, he forgot as to how much he truly craved it, the need for it. He expected maybe a bottle of corner store liquor from the hard ass Fennec to be his only gift, something dull, something that showed he was at least thought of. It wasn’t unexpected for that, the Fennec wasn’t stone cold, but the mushy acts of kindness like a cupcake with a candle.. It was different, shook him up. Made him truly realize how far he’d fallen into that pit of utter self-deprecation.
He could say it was beyond a doubt one of his better birthdays. It was one he needed, a true wake up call to stop being so down about oneself. It showed him he could still be appreciated in some light, not to mention the cupcake was great!
To a point he still questioned if it was Fennec that had given him that gift, since he never acknowledged, or hint at whether or not he may be owed a good cigar for the nice deed. He never truly meant it, but always joked in some way, always seeing if Nick took him seriously enough to get it, in which he’d accept. It was just sitting on a little plate when he hopped up in the back of the van... Nonetheless, he found a small part in his heart to consider the Fennec as something other than a business partner, and slight acquaintance.
