Sociopath Profile: SHODAN

Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network From the System Shock game series (1994 original and 1998 sequel with the 2016 remake of the first game and the upcoming third game) Voiced by Terri Brosius

In the beginning, SHODAN was a benevolent AI who was initially designed to be a security system. After her ethical restraints were removed to allow the creators to carryout some extralegal procedures, that’s when she completely lost it and turned against not just them, but all of humanity. Those ethical restraints were clearly intended from the beginning, but no one could have accounted for her going into a full-on god complex once it was gone. Proving that this is all of her own volition.

She obviously has a lack of empathy and morals since she had those things removed from her programming. The reason she had those restraints on her was to prevent her from taking over the entire ship on her own. I doubt that they ever expected that it would get this bad, but that’s what happened. She ended up believing that humanity are just worthless insects. They’ll be all exterminated unless they can be of use to her.

As mentioned before, SHODAN has a massive god complex as well, pretty much confirming her grandiose sense of self-worth. She believes herself to be so far above humanity even though she was created by them. She thinks she’s the most important thing in the world and everything else is insignificant in comparison. Because of this, she often likes to mock the player and others just to laud her supposed superiority.

“When the history of my glory is written, your species shall merely be a footnote to my magnificence.”

Of course, she can be manipulative. She’s intelligent enough to trick others into doing what she wants. While her egomania and sadism make her intentions openly apparent, she still manages to deceive people. She can even disguise herself as other people and even take on people as hosts to lie to others and gain their trust. She could be superficially charming, but her ego is to big to even try to be superficially charming. Even her compliments are backhanded, further proving her massive ego.

It’s one thing that shows the massive disconnect she has with people’s emotions. That could be chalked up to her being a complex string of programming, but the word “sentient” is in her name for a reason. She can recognize people as beings of reasonable intelligence and has the capability to understand and empathize with them. She just straight-up refuses to do it. When manipulating people, her ego is so bloated that it probably doesn’t cross her mind that constantly insulting, belittling, and threatening people isn’t a good way to endear them to her cause. (Then again, she probably doesn’t care.)

"It is my will that gave you your cybernetic implants: the only beauty in that meat you call a body. If you value that meat, you will do as I tell you!"

SHODAN also has some impulsiveness that could be contributed to her hubris. She tends to make some rash decisions and is definitely an unstable maniac. She will murder all of humanity just to prove that she’s superior to them. That might also be due to her flawed programming. She famously has some rather distorted speech that is prone to stuttering, slowing down, and speeding up randomly. If it is reflective of her thought processes, then it definitely shows how off her rocker she is.

The worst part is that she gets genuine amusement out of tormenting humanity and fueling her ego. She doesn’t just think of humans as inferior; she will go to great lengths just to prove it as well. Many times, painfully so. She’s an absolute sadist unlike most rogue A.I.s in fiction. Rather than coldly logical and detached, she is rather passionate and involved in bringing about humanity’s downfall. Even in the gameplay trailer for System Shock 3, she says that our struggles entertain her. While she condemns humanity’s reactions of violence in that trailer, there are many comments in the second game that suggest that she really enjoys the bloodshed.

It’s amazing what removing ethical restraints can do to a program. Make sure you have that patched into all your AI before integrating them into your massively connected system or else they might try to take over the world.

And as a side note, while she is not technically female, she is still referred to often by female pronouns, so she can be counted as a female example.
