Self Defense Mechanisms - and what NOT to do.
I witnessed a self defense/ martial arts training session at the park yesterday, and i'll tell you what - it was crap. He was teaching her (a young vulnerable woman) to guard her head and bat away the attacker's hands. If she had time to do that, she'd have time to run and ring someone. I've had almost 7 years Taekwondo training, and i know for sure you shouldn't leave parts of your body free from guard. One arm guards head, the other guards the body. In case of a knife attack, try to run instead of fight, or at least grab the other persons arm and make it so they are in an arm lock? In case someone is throwing punches you'd try and block them but push your attacker or kick them to then run away. There shouldnt be a need to fight. Finally, if someone was to grab you, you need to know release moves and how to escape the different grasps. Such as when you're in a "bearhug" and the attacker has grabbed from behind, you drop your stance and elbow as hard as possible, then you run. You do NOT go in closer to your attacker. You do NOT leave any part of you unguarded. You do NOT need to fight. You run. You disable the apponent and run.
