Gotta say I’m super intrigued by how Gary acted towards Little Cato after, well...
And it makes a lot of sense after you see what happened to Gary’s dad. Gary knows better than to ask “are you okay” because of course he’s not okay. Gary is trying to provide what he wanted when his dad died. And then he overdoes it and puts Little Cato in danger because Gary, as always, really sucks at considering the consequences of his actions.
Most shows would have him and Little Cato at odds with each other, unable to connect until something drastic forced them to understand each other.
But Gary already understands Little Cato, better than most of the people around him might expect. He’s literally been in almost the exact same spot
Which is why he went overboard in trying to help Little Cato feel better. It was for them both. And then, as Little Cato says, he later discovers that they were “part of the same club”.
They forge a good connection where most shows would have Little Cato yelling “You’re not my dad!” and running off the fight alone, for Gary to go after him and scold him because ‘he’s not mad, he’s worried’ and Little Cato to burst into tears at the epiphany.
