I'm trying to distract myself from the horror of the world atm so here's a Deltarune thing I was to have written out to refer to if/when this is sleither confirmed of decomfirmed.
Ralsei was supposed to get the thorn ring and gain the ice powers, not Noelle.
The sprite of the ice mage in chapter 3 strongly resembles Ralsei when you first meet him in chapter one. Susie taking Ralsei with her at the route split in chapter 2 is the thing that radically changes the story.
Having Noelle get the ring instead is the prophesy trying to reassert itself, but with a lightener instead of a darker in the ice mage role meaning the power is incredibly different and possible significantly more powerful.
The goats in Undertale use fire magic, Ralsei is an anagram from Asriel and getting ice powers is a sort of remix of the fire powers.
