book prompts tag game!! 📚 tagged by my friend @ninoquincampoix <3

the last book i read : the adjunct by maria adelmann. i was excited by the pitch but then didn't click with the execution. i'm having a hard time lately with contemporary fiction that uses a first-person, present-tense POV, particularly when the MC has a detached personality.

a book i'd recommend : awake in the floating city by susanna kwan. i haven't been able to stop talking about this book! the pacing is a little slow, but once you get into it... man. it's visceral, heartfelt, devastating... my favorite book this year so far.

a book i couldn't put down : the raven king by maggie stiefvater. an excellent conclusion to the cycle, in my mind. this was the first time in a long, long time that i stayed up well past bedtime to finish reading.

a book i've read twice or more : i actually have not reread a whole lot of books—i used to think it was a waste of time when there were so many other new books to read. but i have since changed my mind on the subject! pretty sure my most recent reread was harrow the ninth by tamsyn muir, right before i read nona.

a book on my tbr : pulling from my library shortlist, on the calculation of volume, 1, by solvej balle (trans. by barbara j. haveland). idk if i'll click with this, but everyone's been talking about it, so i feel like i'm obligated to try it! and i'm also always going to support women in translation.

a book i've put down : contact by carl sagan. really wanted to like this since i loved the movie so much, but it was just too slow and, at most points for me, didn't even feel like a novel. the dialogue was stiff and almost completely expository, and there was almost no tension as a result.

a book on my wish list : i would love a copy of territory of light by yuko tsushima (trans. by geraldine harcourt). an absolutely stunning book. i'd also like a copy of the hardcover edition of the rabbit hutch by tess gunty. the paperback cover is SO. BORING.

a non-fiction book i own : care work by leah lakshmi piepzna-samarasinha. been meaning to read this for a while and am putting it on my summer TBR!

what i'm currently reading : fearless, sleepless, deathless: what fungi taught me about nourishment, poison, ecology, hidden stories, zombies, and black survival by maria pinto & roaming by jillian and mariko tamaki! both are really good so far!

what i plan on reading next : either be ready when the luck happens by ina garten OR gliff by ali smith! i have both checked out in audio format right now.

oddly specific thing that brings me joy: the way my dog stretches in the morning. usually accompanied by some really good awoos.

phone wallpaper: for my work focus, i've got a photo from Joshua Tree National Park at sunrise, and for my regular, non-work focus it's a photo of my street on a recent snowy day.

are you a morning or night person? growing up i was much more of a night person unobserved>, but now i have a hard time staying up as late as i used to. doesn't necessarily mean i'm a morning person now, but I do really enjoy having some unstructured time before work. ...that said. on the weekends all bets are off lol.

favorite scent: cinnamon

origin of your username: an old friend and i became obsessed with hiking and backpacking in high school. there was a youtuber we'd watch who posted long videos of his backpacking adventures—the specific one i'm thinking of was posted fifteen years ago, holy shit. and being from a relatively flat state we didn't have as many opportunities for adventuring "where the air is thin," so to speak. i fell in love with the beautifully diverse landscape of utah and colorado in particular, and it became my number one bucket list item to go one day. after all this time, i finally get to go this summer <3 and even though that friend and i no longer speak, i still have fond memories of the way we'd dream together.

song on repeat: not one song in particular, but the latest album from karnivool called in verses (released last friday) was thirteen years in the making, and it was well worth the wait.

i will always order this food: miso ramen, or pizza with ham and pineapple. fight me.

current favorite show/movie/book? really loving the fallout show, the movie stranger than fiction (2006), and just finished the third book in the raven cycle! also loved ace by Angela Chen.

last thing you hyperfixated on: creating my vision board for the year! one thing about me is i can fuck with a collage.

what's your job? i'm an adjunct writing professor and associate editor for a small press!
