Sad news came yesterday. Champion sprinter Takeover Target from Australia was put to sleep after suffering a broken leg in a paddock accident.
Takeover Target, purchased for just A$1,250 by his then taxi-driving trainer, Joe Janiak, went on to become an international sprint superstar with victories in his native Australia, Singapore, Japan and Great Britain.
He retired in 2009 with a record of 41: 21-6-4 and earnings of A$6,028,311. Nine years ago, almost to the date, he won the King’s Stand Stakes at the Royal Ascot meeting.
Joe Janiak told racing.com: “He must have been trying to get up and his foot went from underneath him ... I'd say that the break was where the screws were and there was a bit of wear and tear and I think that it just came apart ... Thankfully he's had six years of a good life in the paddock. He made a lot of people very happy, he made a lot of people rich and sent a few bookmakers broke!”
Rest In Peace, sweet boy. 27 September 1999 - 20 June 2015
