It’s never too late to salvage the day.
I temporarily fell back into some of my old bad habits over the weekend and some had even started creeping into my Monday. I hadn’t been able to sleep, and I was struggling to get three healthy meals in per day just like I had before. I’d just wrapped up some massive projects for school, and I was really starting to let things I’d be working on over the break and next semester stress me out.
But then on Monday evening, I just stopped.
I took a step back and got away from the computer. I made myself stop thinking and stop dwelling on how tired I felt from such poor sleep the two nights before. I knew I needed to get some exercise in--any exercise, even if it was light--and I found a yoga class at my university’s gym. I just threw on a t-shirt and some yoga pants and didn’t give myself time to think about it.
About fifteen minutes in, I realized my mindset was already shifting back to the better habits I’d begun to develop. It was fairly late in the evening, but I’d still managed to make myself productive even at that time of day. I even did better in the yoga class than I ever had before and for the first time thoroughly enjoyed it.
By the time I left, I felt so much more at ease and rejuvenated. It wasn’t a hard or intense workout, but it was just the reset button I needed. As a result, I slept more soundly and started going back into my healthy habits the following morning.
To me, that was a perfect example of how it’s never too late in the day to get your mind and body back on track. We’re usually our own worst enemies, and too often we defeat ourselves before we even try to fix the situation.
“I’ll be better tomorrow.”
Why not do it today? You still can, even if it’s just a small step forward. Progress is progress, and that’s one less step you’ll have to take tomorrow. When you feel yourself starting to backpedal, stomp that foot firmly in the ground and make yourself move towards the right track.
You have to learn to recognize that you have control over the decisions you make in your life. You can make the decision to go to bed at a reasonable hour. You can make the decision to go for a walk or exercise. You can make the decision to eat healthier foods.
If you haven’t been your best lately, don’t dwell on it. Use the time left today to make that first change, whatever it may be.
