In Japanese you can distinguish between having an animate (arimasu) あります vs inanimate object (imasu) います.

I wonder if that also affects how people think of possessing people or pets eg you can’t really ‘have’ eg in English you would say I have a boyfriend/ I have a child/ a pet or even a plant… but in Japanese rather than X があります, you have to say X います..

so rather than having or possessing someone or something alive, they simply exist or are simply there

Every once in a while some people would get possessed by the soul of themselves from some hours or some years ago, so each time you had to explain to them where they were and that this was their future or they would get evil and start attacking you.

Here's Crystal, the host(and friend) of Amethyst.

Crystal met Amethyst when they were out in a forest, Amethyst was kinda injured and hiding in a bush. Crystal found them, and took them home to heal them. When Amethyst woke up, they initially thought Crystal was a threat to them, and started scurrying away from her. After some reassuring words, Amethyst let her take care of them. They became friends from that.

The first time Amethyst possessed Crystal, Crystal was trying to find a better way to communicate with them. There was an obvious language barrier, and only working with yes/no questions only went so far. Amethyst got Crystal's attention, trying to get picked up. When she picked them up, she asked what they wanted, "Did you want some food? Cuddles?" But Amethyst started to crawl up her arm, reaching her skull. Amethyst gave their best attempt at an apologetic look, and, before Crystal could do or say anything, crawled into her eyesocket. It was kinda painful, and Crystal tried reaching after them to get them out, but then they changed, and weren't in control anymore. It was rather jarring, and pretty scary. But then Amethyst spoke up, in Crystal's voice. "Sorry 'bout dat, but I thought this would be the best way to communicate with ya. I apologize for the unrad way I had ta do it." Crystal wasn't entirely sure how this happened, but sent a thought of forgiveness towards them, hoping that thoughts would work, since she couldn't speak. Amethyst felt it, and explained that they can basically read her thoughts, so long as she was directing those thoughts to them, because they can't read minds even if they're possessing someone. "Ya got dat? ...Alright, I'll get out for now, let ya have ya body again." 'One question before you do, how is it you're able to do this?' "Oh, I'm a parasite, specifically a 'Fresh' parasite. Parasites of my kind can possess a, uh, host. Some o' us are not very friendly, and some have ta use the host's Soul ta live. Not me, though, I'm one a the ones that can live without that. Regular food works just as well wit us. But possessing a host still takes energy from the host, so ya might be a bit tired after I'm out." And after that, Amethyst left her body. Crystal definitely felt a bit tired after that, and offered to take a nap with her. Amethyst was a bit surprised, considering they just possessed her in an almost rude way(even though they didn't have a way to ask for permission properly), but accepted the offer.

Crystal realized, after a couple more possessions, that Amethyst tends to change her clothes into rather bright an clashing clothes. Her clothes before was kinda comfy and loose, with duller colors. Her clothes went back to normal after Amethyst exited, but she decided to take them with her to an old school clothes store. She let Amethyst pick out a few outfits for themselves, and the clothes she's wearing now are similar to the one she's wearing in the picture above. Amethyst was very happy about this, as they were using some of their own energy to change Crystal's clothes to ones they liked.

Over time, Crystal had gotten used to Amethyst's way to possess and communicate with her, and it wasn't painful anymore. They had also worked out a schedule for when Amethyst gets to possess her body. Amethyst gets to possess her for a full day twice a week. They use this time to show Crystal some of the other universes and worlds that they've seen before. They even met Fresh once, it was alright, but they haven't seen him since.

More on Crystal, her teeth and fingertips are pure crystal. Though two of her teeth are actually silver. She learned how to keep them clean and, in her claws' case, polished. She lives in a cabin close to the forest she found Amethyst in.

What if Haunting Melody possessed Cicada? Has that ever happened? Do either of them want that?

Eh, Haunting Melody is possessing Phantastic Tone for reasons.

Talked @angrylittleburd up about this subject as Haunting Melody and Phantastic Tone ARE his characters.

Mainly due to Tone being a sad drunk with all his mental shields and will gone, and desperation making him willing to make a deal with a ghost to make his life easier. A willing vessel usually too intoxicated to fight for control even if he decided to.

Melody ain’t considering this prime estate, but it’s the easiest solution to get to live again, in one way.

Cicada’s stress and anxieties keep their mind a bit too on high alert, so even if they consented, it would be an instinctive battle of wills to get to pilot the vessel.

That and at least Tone is a pony. Melody rather be a pony and a stallion at that, as he only sees Cicada as a mare cuz he’s Straight(tm). Sure Cicada can shapeshift, but even if that would be a neat bonus, would still be too much of a fight to keep full control. When Tone takes absolutely no effort.

So Melody makes do.

Ring of Possession (Item idea)

Here's one for you DM's that want your players to be able to possess npc/enemies.

Appearance: A ring that looks akinded engagement ring that has a spike where the gem should be.

Description: This ring, made by a spy, allows the user to possess the body of another person. All they have to do is stab themselves with the spike on the ring & then put the ring on the figure of the person the user wishes to possess. Of course you can also do this with two unwilling people via stabbing one person with the ring & then putting it on another person. When the possessor goes into the possessed person's body, the possessor's body will just go into a comative state & will not respond to anything. To un-possess just take the ring off the figure of the possessed person.
