Where Did The Idea of “Acting White” Come From?
It's a phrase that has been used in the black community and I want to explore where the phrase and the thinking comes from. How does this type of phrase hinder black people in society?
The Black kids who thought they were better than the other Black kids because they didn’t listen to mainstream rap now work for the New Republic and the Grio and write Op-EDs about how they’re deeply scarred by being called “Ores” or “talking White.”
They’re the worst - and if you were to do a dive into their adolescent social media you’d find the exact same anti-Black statements as their white counterparts.
The phenomenon of "talking white," or changing your voice to sound more like a white person, is having a real media moment right now. Upcoming films "Sorry to Bother You" and "BlacKkKlansman" both feature black men appearing to be white over the phone. But does it work?
I can't stand the "xyz makes you not black enough" mentality. I hate that being weird or awkward, not having an accent or not speaking AAVE, liking rock music, or being into nerdy geeky stuff means you're self-hating, or "acting/talking white", or wanting to be white. What I hate most is that this comes from ADULTS! Like, I thought I had escaped this crap when I left high school!
There's No Such Thing As Talking White. Or Black.

*This is probably why I don't have friends anymore.
