TALOFOFO FALLS RESORT PARK, GUAM (September 26, 2015)
The Talofofo falls are a series of cascades along Guam’s Ugum River. At the park, one travels via cable car to enjoy the magnificent sights from above and then on foot to cross a suspension bridge that brings you up close to the raging waters.
There are also kiddie rides and themed gardens, but Dad, Eileen, Shane and I spent more time at Yokoi’s cave. A sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War, Shoichi Yokoi went into hiding when American forces captured the island in the 1944 Battle of Guam. On January 24, 1972, he was discovered by two locals checking shrimp traps along a small river in Talofofo. Yokoi had known since 1952 that the war had ended but feared coming out of hiding, explaining that Japanese soldiers were told to prefer death to the disgrace of getting captured alive.
