Ravi Shankar: India's Master Musician / Recorded in London (1964)

I wasn’t looking for this LP, but when I found it in a local art gallery that briefly sold records on the side (and promptly went out of business -- that’ll teach them to dabble in the music business!), how could I resist?

Coincidentally (or maybe not), I also picked up Howlin’ Wolf’s London sessions LP that day!

When these recordings were made in 1964, Shankar was just beginning to enjoy true celebrity in Swinging London (with no small help from a positively star-struck George Harrison), so these performances were kept relatively short.

“Raga Hamsadhwani” (or, as I like to call it, “Have a Ham Sandwich”) reaches a somewhat premature crescendo, and when Ravi lets rip across much of “Dhun Kafi,” it’s like he’s trying to come across as lead guitar shredder (then again, the rise of Clapton and Hendrix was still a few years in the future).

So by far the biggest payoff of this LP is reserved for the 25-minute “Raga Ramkali” on side two, where Shankar, Kanai Dutt (on tabla) and Nodu C. Mullick (on tamboura) finally have enough time to explore and improvise before achieving a positively dizzying climax.

All in all, I’m sure this LP was fashioned as primer for Westerner listeners, first coming to grips with Hindustani classical music -- and that’s not a knock because I myself fall into that category.

To that end, I probably learned more quick and handy tips about the form from this LP’s liner notes (above, check out the helpful glossary) than from all of my prior, limited exposure to this music.
