Language of Flowers Rook Asks: Pt 1

Moss: Does Rook remember their mother?

Choice - All Three:

Camris:

Yes. He used to remember her fondly, then the contract he was given at eighteen to decide his status with the Crows shone a new light on things, and after going over every memory he has of her and what he learned his views on her have changed to less favourable(He hates her).

Tamrian:

Yes. She was an anchor in his world until he was nineteen, she taught him unconditional love and acceptance. He remembers every laugh line on her face, the scar over her right eyebrow, the lines of her Vallaslin, the sound of her voice(he still dreams of her), how she'd have him braid her hair in the evenings, her cooking.

Telaine:

What little he remembers is not good. She gave him to the Crows when he was five. The next time he saw her was about a week before his twelfth birthday, she showed up in Salle and begged/harassed Viago until he finally agreed to let her see Telaine.

Telaine was not happy to see her, not only did she use him as a way to pay off her gambling debts, she showed up with another kid she'd had maybe a few months after she gave Telaine away. She spent almost two weeks trying to get him to forgive her, to accept his sibling and telling him stories about his father.

He hates that she gave him away like he was nothing but a means to an end and he feels like she replaced him. The stories about his father only made him wonder if the man had left because he wasn't a good enough kid(mamae fibbed quite a bit about how present his father was, where he was/went, and that he'd be coming back), and he doesn't know what's true or not.

Snapdragon: What’s the most selfish thing they’ve ever done?

Tamrian:

He feels that his accepting the bargain that Rainier offered him in order to willingly leave the town where he would definitely be killed if he stayed and go to the Anderfels willingly was selfish of him.

Myrtle: How does Rook’s life (and potentially their partner’s life) change if they have children and/or get married?

Choice: All of them

None of them have ever thought they'd get married, and none of them plan to have any children(two are gay while one transitioned and is a Warden). If they did get married their partner would have to accept that the Crows will continue to take contracts(though they would try to take the less risky contracts), and the that the Wardens life span is likely still shortened due to the blight even after the blight is 'calmed'.

Forget-me-nots: What haunts Rook the most?

Camris:

His nearly a year with the Altus Blood Mage that he was sold to haunts him, to the point that he regularly has nightmares about it if he fails to take the tonic that keeps him from entering the Fade when he sleeps. Then what he discovered in his mother's work space during his status deciding contract with the Crows when he was 18, she was doing a lot of the same things to others that the Blood Mage that had him had done(specifically the torture and using of their blood for spells/rituals). 

Tamrian:

The loss of his family is what haunts him, first his parents and then his sister. The loss of his sister is worse for him though, because she took her last breath in his arms even as he did everything he could to heal her.

Telaine:

His mother giving him to the Crows, and then everything he suffered during his training and some of his contracts.

Rosemary: What is Rook’s earliest memory?

Tamrian:

His mom telling him that he was going to have a sibling after he asked why her stomach was different once she started showing(his sister was five years younger than him, he will be turning 30 in Harvestmere/aka October).

Bergamot: Does Rook drink? What sort of drunk are they?

Camris:

He drinks excessively when he's coping badly. And the type of drunk he is depends on what's caused him to resort to drinking.

If a relationship has tanked, he'd in a bar getting drunk to forget and likely get into a fight to see what happens. Will he go home bruised up and alone, or will they end up making out mid fight? Place your bets!

When single - If he's in a bar drinking simply because he's stressed he is likely going to be flirting and trying to pick someone up for a bit of fun.

If he'd in a relationship, he tries to avoid drinking at bars if he's upset simply because he knows himself well enough that he doesn't want to cause the person he's with to worry about him getting into a fight.

Finally properly starting Tamrian's campaign, stats/lore is currently rough, and I'm trying to feel out how to write for him beyond his intro that I have done up.🤔

Gender: Trans-Masc(fully transitioned as planned in 9:46 Dragon- Solace, before reaching the Anderfels)

Family: Parents: died in 9:41 Dragon when a fade tear appeared near their Clan camp and they were overwhelmed by 'demons'. Sister: Janessa, killed by humans in 9:46 Dragon.

9. Does Rook enjoy being a Grey Warden? Do they make any friends within the Wardens? Does Weisshaupt feel like a new home to them, or more like a prison?

Tamrian Thorne: 

He hates it. He doesn't really bother to try making friends while training with the Warden's after his Joining. There are a few that he tolerates, but he doesn't consider them friends. Weisshaupt is a prison. A very large, unpleasant, smelly prison.  His first year as a Warden involved him spending a lot of drunken nights in the dungeon cells.

Alaine Xavier Thorne:

It isn't the life he prefers to live, but he's still alive so it's something. He made a few friends at first but after losing a couple of them he pulled back because he's tired of losing people that become dear to him. Weisshaupt isn't really a home to him, but it's also not a prison. It's just some place that gives him an anchor.

10. When does Rook learn about the fate of all Grey Wardens? What do they think of the Calling? Are they afraid of it? Do they look forward to it, someday?

Tamrian Thorne: 

He doesn't fear it, he thinks it's bullshit. and he nearly decked Rainer when he found out. What was the point of saving him from a mob of humans trying to kill him if the fate of becoming a Grey Warden just meant he'd eventually suffer losing his damn mind to the Calling. He looks forward to dying in general, but not that way. He will likely end up talking to Viago about setting up a contract on himself once he feels the first hint of it.

Alaine Xavier Thorne:

He was confused as to why they bothered to save him. Like, yay he's alive, but now he's going to go off the deep-end someday and wander off to where ever? Doesn't fear it and doesn't look forward to it. It's just something he'll deal with when it comes, he might follow Tamrian's lead on that whole contract thing.

8. How did their Joining go? Were they the only survivor? What did they think when they learned what the ritual entails? Did they try to run away, or did they do it willingly?

Tamrian Thorne: 

Irritatingly well in that he survived it. One other in the group of four that were brought in also survived. When he learned what it entailed he was even more pissed off than when he was first Conscripted because he hates blood magic. He doesn't fear it, or think it's inherently evil, it is the fact that it's too easily abused by those desperate for power. He was not willing, but he'd made a deal with Rainer on the way back to the Anderfels and he is a man of his word, so he didn't try to run away.

Alaine Xavier Thorne:

As his Joining wasn't planned, he was the only one. There was no running away on his part simply because he was on deaths doorstep. He was too out of it due to his injuries to really take note of what it entailed, he was just handed a chalice and told to drink. It was disgusting and when he found out later what it entailed he was unhappy. While his father is a magister, he was raised to abhor blood magic and the ritual was literally blood magic.

12. How do they feel about angering the First Warden? Does Rook choose to leave their posting, or are they ordered to take time away from the Wardens? Are they happy to get away, or do they wish they could have stayed?

Tamrian Thorne: 

Doesn't give a fuck that he angered the First Warden, considers is an achievement. Would do it again in a heartbeat. He packed Everything when he was told to leave and left with a smile. He was so damn happy to be 'banished' that he got a new tattoo to celebrate. Hilariously, it was Griffon themed, because he actually adores Griffons.

Alaine Xavier Thorne:

He's neutral about having angered the First Warden. It wasn't his goal, but all things considered, it was an acceptable cost. He was also neutral about being sent away. The change of scenery was greatly appreciated, up until they they ended up back in Minrathous, could have done without that part.

2. Does Rook have any living friends/family? Does this change as they get older? Do they try to stay in touch with any living friends/family after joining the Wardens?

Tamrian Thorne: 

Tamrian lost his sister(only remaining family) when he was 23. In that moment he pretty much stopped living, as it were. He did not bother making friends after leaving their clan, and he didn't stay in touch with anyone in the clan either. Becoming a Warden didn't change any of that.

Alaine Xavier Thorne:

He no longer has contact with his family after they disowned him for falling in love with a man. It was bad enough that he'd never manifested magic. They'd even tolerated the fact that Alaine had cast off what they considered normal in regards to gender, but bringing an Elven Man home was the final straw.

He maintained no friendships that he had after leaving Minrathous, though he does rekindle with some of his acquaintances once he has to go back to Minrathous in 9:52 Dragon.

Rage Consumes, Conscription Ensues

Word Count: 2948 *Content Warning- Inference of SA*

9:46 Dragon- Justinian:

Tamrian sat there, his sisters' body cradled in his arms, the shouts not reaching him as he gently brushed blood stained silver-white hair from her face. If he'd just gotten here sooner..

Janessa had only gone to get something from the herbal shop, shouldn't have even taken more than a few minutes. He'd been so engrossed in what he was reading that he hadn't noticed how long she was gone until almost an hour had passed. He figured she'd just fallen into conversation with the shop keep, the two of them were forever happy to talk to one another about herbs and potions, so he'd kept reading a bit longer.

After another half-hour passed, worry set in and he went to look for her, worry changing to panic when the shop keep said she'd left nearly an hour ago after getting what she needed and saying that she'd mentioned getting the last thing she needed from her favourite spot since he didn't have any in stock.

Her favourite spot... a small clearing in a copse of trees at the edge of town. Over the last year humans had taken to using the space for weird celebrations and rituals, he'd asked her to stay away from it and for the most part she had. Except when she wanted to harvest a bit of the flowers or berries that grew there.

As he entered the area, an overwhelming metallic scent filled the air and he staggered to a stop at the sight of a man doing up his trousers as another knelt by Janessa, laughing as her body bent awkwardly when he leaned to lick blood off of her cheek while he twisted a dagger into her side. And the air crackled...

There was nothing after that, the next thing Tamrian remembered was holding Janessa in his arms, both of them now drenched in blood. The sounds of shouting growing louder as people gathered, one scream pulling him from the void "My sons, you bastard!" 

Tamrians' arms relaxed their hold on Janessa as his anger flared and he shouted back as he gently laid his sister down "Were Monsters!" 

As he turned to look for the man who had yelled, he found that the space between them had been closed. The man rushing to grab Tamrians' shoulder only leading to Tamrian standing, his own hand closing tightly around the mans wrist as his face twisted with rage. Light spidered its way across Tamrians' skin as he leaned in close to the man, voice low as his other hand grabbed hold of the mans throat and squeezed "... and only a Monster raises monsters."

He woke days later, in a cell. Body bandaged, hands and feet bound tightly, a gag in his mouth... and a strange silence outside. Mythal'enaste... everything hurt. He groaned as he sat up, confused as to why he was here, how he was even alive. Between the blood powered electrical chaos he'd unleashed and the mob of pissed off humans, he should be dead.

The plan to dislodge the gag from his mouth was quickly discarded as he looked down at his hands... whoever had bound them knew what they were doing. The sound of a throat clearing brought his head up, green eyes narrowing as they met steel blue eyes. Since Tamrian couldn't speak, he simply made a disgusted noise as he looked away and laid back down. 

The Warden stood there a moment, one brow quirked. That, wasn't a response he'd expected. Three days ago he'd come in on the tail end of what had happened, those around for the lead up didn't seem the most neutral with their versions of what had led to him seeing an elf grabbing hold of a human and lifting them up nearly off the ground as electricity ran through him and then enveloped them both.

He'd had to intervene when the others had discovered that the elf was still somehow alive and began attacking his unconscious body, and then they'd started to turn on him until one noted his armour and the Griffon emblazoned on his shield as two more Wardens moved up to flank him, weapons drawn.

That's when the justifications started, the shouts becoming cacophonous as he lifted the elfs' body and demanded a healer be brought, silence only falling due to the finality in his words "I've heard your version, now I want to hear his."

He'd left the other two Wardens outside to stand guard after a small group tried to bust their way into the building just after the healer arrived. He didn't normally travel with others, but this was one time he was actually grateful that he had. And while she didn't seem the type to try anything as she examined the elf, he'd kept a close eye on the healer "So, do you know him? Or the other elf that was in the clearing?"

She'd shaken her head as she tended to the wounds "No, they're newer to the area. Been here for a year or two maybe. I only know that they're siblings as I'd seen the sister, Janessa, once or twice when the seasons changed. I think she said his name was Tamrian?" she froze when she went to wash the area so that she could bandage his thighs, part of the shredded trousers griped in her hand, and Rainer stepped closer "What, what's wrong?"

She looked confused as she kept looking between the elfs' face, the shredded cloth in her hand and then his groin area "He... he's a she?" Ahh, like Krem. He looked at the healer as he stepped back "And? What does that have to do with treating his wounds?" 

She turned her head towards him as she started to speak "But... she.." only to have whatever she was going to say trail off at the look on his face "Right.. it's going to take some time, but, uh.. he should pull through." 

The towns mayor had shown up shortly after, with the only information being given to him coming from the mob, he'd demanded that the healer secure Tamrians' hands, feet, and mouth once she finished treating him and directed her in how he wanted it done. 

As she gathered her things to leave, the mayor turned to Rainer and told him that he could also go ahead and leave, only to frown when Rainer said no, he hadn't heard what had happened from Tamrian and he wasn't leaving until he had. Especially not after seeing the sisters body and hearing those final words as he watched what Tamrian did to the man that had rushed him "You people don't even care what happened to his sister, you're only angry that those men were killed."

The mayor puffed up at that "Whatever happened to her doesn't justify those men being killed!" Rainer took a step forward "But them killing her is no issue for you? They didn't deserve to be killed for what they'd done, but she deserved to be killed for whatever reason they decided?" the mayor sputtered "Now wait a minute, I didn't say that!" 

Rainer snorted "Might not have said those words, but you're certainly acting like that's the case. And just in case you aren't getting the hint, I will not be leaving until I talk to him. In fact, I'm going to make this even easier for you to understand. No matter what he says, he will be leaving with me. I'm invoking the Right to Conscription, and every single person in this town will also be Conscripted if they come though that door with the intent to cause harm."

The mayors face went red "YOU CAN'T DO THAT!" and Rainer almost laughed "I am a Grey Warden, so you know damn well that I can. And I am. So you should get on your way, focus on something more important. Like how those men assaulted and murdered that girl, and letting your people know that they are at risk of Conscription." 

It had been blessedly quiet since the mayor informed the wannabe vigilantes of his promise. The occasional random would show up to spout off only to immediately shut up and slink away when one of the two guarding the door would knock and cheerfully announce "Hey, Rainer. We've got a new recruit that wants to talk to you."  

The mayor kept popping in to try and get Rainer to change his mind only to storm out just as frustrated as when he arrived. The healer had also been coming by a couple of times each day to check on Tamrian, salve his wounds and change out bandages.

Trying to get fluids into an unconscious man was the main challenge, and as day three neared an end she began to worry that he might not actually make it if he didn't wake up soon. The mayor refusing to let the gag be removed for more than the few minutes to try to get him to drink was not helping any.

Rainer had been near to dozing off when the sound of Tamrian sitting up snapped his eyes open. He'd stood there for a few moments after that initial meeting, pondering that noise of disgust Tamrian made as he laid back down. That the kid was even alive was a miracle, now to figure out what kind of person he was.

Rainer grabbed the cell door key and a chair, and once the door was open, he set the chair inside to the right of the door. A clear path out left wide open, he moved over to the cot, hands reaching down to lift Tamrians' hands up he as pulled out a dagger and began cutting the binding away.

Tamrian didn't move. The only reaction given was a tired sigh. Rainer moved to the end of the cot, and cut the bindings from Tamrians feet and legs. He left the gag to Tamrian as he sat down in the chair. Tamrian still didn't move. So Rainer sat back in silence, waiting, as he whittled a piece of wood into the beginnings of a Griffon. 

Tamrian simply lay there, wondering if he could just wait the man in the chair out. After about half an hour passed he gave up, hand moving silently as he removed the gag and then broke the quiet "Why." 

Rainer looked up from the carving "Why what?" Tamrian scowled as he rolled onto his back, eyes locking into an unwinnable staring contest with the ceiling "Why did you remove the bindings. Why are you here. Why the little test you have set up there."

Rainer went back to carving "Ahh, you noticed that, did you?" Tamrian snorted "Was I not supposed to? It isn't exactly subtle to anyone with a functioning brain." he let his head tilt to the side enough to see the man in periphery "So how about those other whys." 

Absently brushing woodchips and dust from his leg, Rainer gave half a shrug "I didn't think the bindings were necessary. And I was just passing through." his hands stilled, thumb smoothing over the wood he held "So now, how about you. Why?" 

Tamrian turned his head fully towards the man "You weren't there? I'm sure everyone in the town has filled you in, so what's the point of asking me." one brow raised "I was there for the end, so I want to know what led to it, from you, not them. Because what I saw & heard doesn't seem to fit with what those people say." 

Tamrian rolled over onto his side, back to the man "You're not even from here, so what does it matter to someone just passing through." Rainer adjusted in his seat "From what I understand, you aren't from here either. Healer said you and your sister, Janessa, were newer to the area."

Tamrian curled into himself at the sound of her name, the movement causing pain to flare through his body as his throat tightened "Don't. You don't know us, just finish passing through and move on to wherever you were going." 

Rainer stood then, moving back out of the cell to grab the pitcher of water and a cup "Yeah, about that. I had a chat with the mayor about you and when I get to moving on..." Tamrians' ear twitched at the sound of water being poured and then footsteps as the man reentered the cell and stopped next to the cot ".. and when I do move on, you'll be going with me. So, you can tell me why while we're here, or on the road once you're able to travel." 

Tamrian rolled to sit up, disbelief flashing across his face, his words coming out as broken as his thoughts "Wait, what? Why, how..." his legs sliding off the cot then, hands on his knees as he shook his head "You can't, they aren't letting me go."

Rainer held the cup out to Tamrian as he responded to each "You'll be going with me, because I said you're going with me. Because I'm a Grey Warden, through the Right of Conscription. And I can, they don't have a choice." 

Tamrian wasn't even thinking as he took the offered cup, both hands wrapping around it tightly "A Grey Warden... why would you even want me? I killed THREE..." and then his eyes narrowed "No. No, no, no... I've heard of the Grey Wardens, from back when all those fade tears and demons were everywhere a few years ago. The Inquisitor nearly banished you all from the south because the Mages of your Order were doing blood magic and summoning demons. I will not be a part of that, I refuse!"

Rainer flinched "The Inquisitor nearly banished the Grey Wardens, not me. I didn't become a Grey Warden until after Corypheus was stopped." Tamrian looked up then, confusion on his face "You.. you joined them -after- everything they did?! The blood magic? The demons.." he threw the cup as he spoke, his voice rising to a yell, "The Demons they summoned by murdering their fellow Grey Wardens?! Do you think people haven't heard what happened, that the assholes in this town will actually honour the Right of fucking Conscription? The bastards are probably plotting to kill you right now." 

Tamrian went to stand, the shift in tone as he spoke catching Rainers' attention "You should leave while you can, before they..." and everything spun so hard that he started to fall forward, Rainer catching him only causing him to recoil back onto the cot "..take whoever else you want. But you aren't taking me, leave me to the Din'Anshiral I've chosen."

Rainer shook his head, stubborn ass "Not happening. I.. had my reasons for joining. Why the sudden worry for me and my men's safety?"  Tamrian lay back down in the hopes of stopping everything from moving "You said you joined after... you can't be judged for what happened if you weren't part of it or didn't know."

Rainer sighed "I knew." Tamrian groaned "Your sanity can be questioned though, are you infuckingsane?" Rainer chuckled at that "The Inquisitor suggested I was a bit crazy once, guess he wasn't wrong. But you aren't too sane yourself wanting to stay here just so those people can kill you."

He moved to get another cup and filled it, handing it to Tamrian as he continued "You've been out for three days, start drinking. Now, you said you killed three. I only saw the one you grabbed, where were the other two? I didn't see any other bodies except..." his words trailed off then.

Tamrian raised himself up just enough to drink without getting dizzy or spilling the water and then carefully laid back "So.. I don't remember what I actually did to them. I just know that I and the ground were covered in their blood and what remained of them when I came back to myself. I remember holding my sister, then one voice yelling..." 

Rainer refilled the cup again "Yeah, that's where I came in. He yelled about his sons, you called them monsters." the air around Tamrian sparked, the fliers on the wall starting to singe and curl from the heat "Because they were! Did you see my sister?! What they did to her?! Only monsters are capable of that!" what Rainer had seen of Janessa was disturbing, and he nodded as he handed the refilled cup to Tamrian and sat down "But why the father?" 

Tamrians' empty hand clenched into a fist, the man said he was there so Tamrian answered the question with a question "What did you hear?" Steel blue eyes connected with enraged green eyes and as Rainer repeated the words, Tamrian said them in unison "Only a Monster raises monsters." 

Tamrian finished the water, and then laid back, shifting onto his side to face the wall again "So now you know. There's no need for you to stay, and you don't need to take me with you. With all the issues that the Grey Wardens have, I doubt they need another murdering mage in their ranks." 

Rainer stood then, staring at Tamrians' back for a moment before he spoke "Actually. I'm pretty sure that you're just what the Grey Wardens need. We'll be leaving as soon as I finish getting things sorted."

Tamrian rolled back to look at the man, anger and confusion warring across his face as Rainer headed for the door, turning just as he went to open it "I'm Warden Rainer, by the way. You can call me Thom, though." and then he was out the door.
