Question about your general character naming policy- are you and lynx aiming to keep the names as close to canon as possible while fitting your own name system, or are some of the similarities more coincidental? Wondered this since a lot of the names stayed the same, and some like Aspencloud or Lizardtail kept one part of their original names despite qualifying for others
There's a few strategims I take with renaming characters, many of them I took from Dullard's sensibilities, some I invented myself. For examples, I'll be using characters from the prequel super editions, since they're not gonna be spoilery.
Love love LOVE your post about how high level sports culture transfers into the wilderness environment in YJ and i think it can also apply to the survival/staying on the team aspect. I’m not a soccer player but i do a contact sport (competitive cheerleading) and when you get knocked down you can’t be down too long before you get up again. If you’re bleeding, bruised, or sick, tough shit, because you have to prove you can keep going in order to stay on the mat/field/whatever. making too many excuses for yourself even if it’s for “valid reasons” is a sign of weakness because you have to be willing to put yourself through pretty much any physical or mental discomfort in order to beat out the competition. if you’re not 100% dedicated to the game then you can’t win and there’s a certain amount of respect lost, even if you otherwise get along.
Specifically Jackie reminds me of girls i know from cheer who were made captains for personality reasons but had less of the inherent talent and drive to win than some others did. in a wilderness environment there’s no institution to protect her position of power so she loses the team’s loyalty pretty fast once it’s shown she’s not as ruthless as them
Tysm !! Yeah that was definitely the thing with Jackie. Her death became almost inevitable because she wasnt playing for the team anymore. Allie's fate is meant to foreshadow jackies - she wasnt keeping up, couldnt "play under pressure", so she gets literally 'frozen out'.
The thing is I personally dont think its that Jackie didnt have that ruthlessness, so much as she wasnt someone who could find motivation in the threat of loss. some people are like that, and in a competitive sports setting its a superpower rly. she always only let herself see the possible win and that spurred her on, not the threat of losing or the frustration of letting in a goal you shouldnt have. its why she was always the one able to rally the girls. its why she was captain. she could focus all that negative energy they had into a positive team outcome. you go two goals down in a first half you need a captain who can point out the positives and rally you to make a comeback against the odds, not one thats seething in the corner or barking at you for your mistakes. the circumstances of the wilderness and reading shaunas journal took that from jackie. she had nothing left, nothing to spur her on anymore, she was clearly depressed and convinced she was basically as good as dead already. as a striker when jackie lost the ball its wasnt necessarily expected that she'd be the one to win it back, shauna was her defensive mid, always there to pick up the pieces. jackie never learned how recover the ball and go again without her, so she dies.
Jackie put in the hours to be a good enough striker to take them to nationals when we know she canonically perhaps wasnt as naturally talented, fast, or technical as some of her teammates. to me that says something about her drive and ruthlessness on the field. she became captain because of that mindset. a positive, winning-focused mindset, that unfortunately just didnt translate to the wilderness well because 1) shaunas betrayal tore up her plans and hopes for the future, giving her nothing to fight for 2) this is an environment where the grudge/anger/threat-based mindsets thrive
So what i’ve gathered from your liveblog is that dangerous crow boy’s author should be writing yaoi but is too embroiled in heterosexuality to do so
I was not exaggerating guys, the dynamic and history between River and Cielo was so visceral and poignant to a degree that was truly ridiculous.
Cielo doesn't show up physically until about 3/4th of the way in but he has been there since page fucking one. They've been inseparable since childhood, and when Cielo falls in love with a human River is terrified he'll be left alone and is constantly poking and prodding. Little does he know this girl he's jealous of needs help and rescuing, and Cielo tries to subtly ask him for help but River doesn't pick up on it and pushes him away instead. Cielo goes missing for a decade and River's wallowing about being abandoned only for Cielo to show up on his doorstep on the verge of death, and River immediately drops everything to nurse him back to health and desperately try and draw him out of where he's mentally retreated to, swearing vengeance on whoever did this to him (the girl Cielo'd fallen for).
Later, in Cielo's quest against his former love, he absolutely shreds River's wings and his ability to fly. For this River swears vengeance against him--and grudges are strong in crows. Until he stumbles upon Cielo's trove, his sacred collection of personal items, and understands the depth of Cielo's pain and madness and how badly he failed to save him. He's genuinely brought to his knees by this.
Then Cielo shows up again, five years after they've last spoken. They start physically fighting until River breaks down, asking why, because i would've followed you anywhere. And Cielo says, it was an accident. River apologizes, can't take this revelation and they start fighting again--to the point River has his hands on Cielo's throat in a mirror to how Cielo held his own lover right before she died that is explicitly made by canon. And Cielo's not fighting him. Blake interrupts them, and River breaks again. He apologizes, which indebts him to Cielo by fae rules.
River realizes here his wings have been restored, and in a swirl of emotion from his fight/partial reconciliation/fixed wings, kisses Cielo on the lips and says "I love you, bro." He swears his aid to Cielo's mission of vengeance, and they're tentatively alright until Cielo kidnaps Blake, but that's a whole other thing.
River and Blake? Crows like to collect odd bits and bobs, and Blake was a diy upcycler who likes oddities and fixing things up. Also Blake pushes and fights back and will tell River off when he's an ass, and he thinks that's incredibly hot. They're also mates. They've known each other a week. I cannot emphasize enough that's the extent of their relationship. I'm not trying to downplay it it's just truly that barren it's RIDICULOUS
Hi murphy!! Been watching and commenting on your cat genetics videos for a long while now and they’re super fun, as someone with a casual interest in genetics! Everyone has been rightly scared about the graystripe / millie kids and i thought i’d throw my hat in the ring: Assuming we’re using your S/W and A/a graystripe compromise from the whitestorm video, i think all of the kids are plausible if you make millie a silver chocolate tabico. (O/o, I/i, b/?, A/a.) Kinda like this, but with chocolate instead of black:
So it accounts for blossom’s orange and white, briar’s solid chocolate (as long as graystripe isn’t homozygous B/B), and bumble’s silver. Obviously this is pretty far off from how she’s described in the books but considering her manga design is fucking pink i felt okay doing it. I would totally understand if you didn’t, though!
That being said, if you don’t mind answering, do you think that would work? Or will the gray/millie line continue being horribly impossible?
true but then SHE isn't plausible :( making the tree accurate is about her as much as it is her kids
Hopefully this comes off right but i really admire your dedication to consistent yuriposting no matter how few or many notes it gets. I used to be insecure about putting too much of the same interest on my blog but you’ve unironically inspired me to go full throttle
o7 i hope i inspire many to bravely flop as i do.
