Plains Aboriginal weaver
Mrs. Gai Ah-yun, a Plains Aboriginal woman, demonstrates the use of a backstrap textile loom in this late 19th-century photograph.
Mrs. Gai Ah-yun was a teacher of sewing and the matron of the School for Women, established in Tamsui by Dr. Mackay in the 1880s. The clothing she wears in the photograph appears in an exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum. Together with the carnelian and metal jewelry, this is perhaps the only complete set of Plains Aboriginal bridal clothing and jewelry in existence.
