Varian wasn't expecting to meet Eugene's dad. He didn't even know Eugene had one of those. He also wasn't expecting for Edmund to already know his dad, either.
"Edmund, I want you to meet someone." Quirin gestured for Varian to join him.
Varian slowly put his book down and went over to where his dad was talking to the guy in the black armor. To say he was wary of the guy would be an understatement. He'd just watched two of his dad's friends get mind controlled by Cassandra. And he wasn't to sure of what to make of the guy. He was big and rather intimidating.
"This is my son, Varian." Quirin put an arm around Varian's shoulder. "He's-"
"Varian?" Edmund suddenly took on an expression of recognition. "Oh, yes. Eugene's told me alot about you. Glad to finally meet one of his friends."
"Uh... sorry but um, what exactly has Eugene told you about me?" And why hasn't he mentioned you? He didn't say that part out loud. So, Eugene knew this guy too?
"Just that you're one of his best friends and he sees you like a little brother." Edmund smiled. "It's good to know you two are watching out for eachother."
Varian honestly didn't know what to say. He knew that he and Eugene were friends but he never imagined Eugene would see him as anything more, let alone as a brother.
"He said that?" Varian was vaguely aware of the goofy grin quickly making it's way onto his face.
"Yes, he did." Edmund looked back at Quirin. "And I also know that you've made your father quite proud of you, Varian."
Quirin nodded and smiled at his son. He was truly proud of everything Varian had done to better himself. The lengths he's gone to, to gain back the kingdoms trust, and how much he's grown as a person since Rapunzel freed Quirin from the amber. "I am."
If Varian's smile could get any wider, it did. The look on his son's face made his heart melt. It had been awhile since he'd last seen Varian smile so much and it was a welcome sight.
"Oh, hey dad." Eugene's voice suddenly came from behind Varian making the teen jump in surprise.
Varian spun around to see a smirk on Eugene's face. He quickly put two in two together.
"Wait a second, you're Eugene's dad?"
Edmund nodded with a confused look, like him being Eugene's dad was common knowledge.
"So," Eugene leaned as much as he could on Varian without knocking him over. "Getting acquainted with the best teenager in the world, I see."
Varian pushed Eugene's arm off him. "You flatter me."
"Can't help it. Team Awesome, remember?"
Varian smiled again. "Right, Team Awesome."
"Well, it was nice to meet you Varian." Edmund gave him one last smile before leaving to talk to Rapunzel.
"You're dad's pretty nice."
Eugene nodded. "Yeah, he is. He's not quite all there but he's a good guy."
"Hey, Eugene? I'm glad you finally found your family."
Eugene pulled him into a side hug. "I already have a family. He just got added into it."
His words touched Varian to the core. He was part of Eugene's family? The question became an answer as he let it stew in his thoughts for awhile. He was part of Eugene's family.
I love Team Awesome. Sue me
