YESSS THE 'THEN LOOK AT ME' A CLASSIC, MY BELOVED, ONE OF MY FAVORITE TROPES.
OH MY GOD
EXCUSE ME
OH BOY
OKAY
YEAH THATS FINE
I'M NORMAL ABOUT THAT
FEELING SO NORMAL
Thee looks at Tanthai like he can see right through his emptiness and into the hurt he can't escape that leaves him in such pain he can't even feel it anymore and Tanthai looks at Thee like he's terrified of what this might mean because he can't feel anything but knows the feelings are pounding at the door of his mind.
And then we go back to the night of the crime and we see how Thee has the same look and Tanthai is even more like a caged animal trying to escape, hurt and angry all the time.
Tanthai surrounded by people who are drinking with him because of his father's money and so drunk and lashing out and angry at his father but paying for everyone around him and then Thee. Thee who is also paid by his father but is there for him and takes him away before he hurts himself more.
It's such a good dynamic and I like it even more because most of the spoiled princes we've gotten lately just haven't actually been that spoiled. They've all been Good Boys who are Also A Bit Spoiled. But Tanthai is an asshole because he's been spoiled and abused at the same time and I love it. @absolutebl It's not quite whipping boy since Thee doesn't take punishments but it's also past the usual spoiled princes we've been seeing and I love it here.
I love the asshole who is one because of trauma and abuse because it's not an excuse or an explanation but it is part of him and to see him loved nonetheless, to see him being taken care of by someone who loves him even knowing how much of an asshole he is. Thee knows exactly who Tanthai is and he still looks at him like that.
Look at the difference! Look at the change! Look at him much they both got from that sense of freedom and their escape! The way Tanthai seeks him out so desperately and the way he clings to him so desperately.
And then the smiles.
This is the first time we've seen them really smile. Either of them! Thee and Tanthai have been trapped in hell for so long and al it takes is a little time together, a little chance at freedom, a taste of what it means to be able to be themselves and all their shields fall down. All their protections collapse. Tanthai goes by Tan and turns into the softest boy in the world who only wants to save a kitten and knows he's a bad person back at home and blames himself. Thee gets to speak his love and to show Tan what he really thinks of him and how highly he holds him in his esteem, to promise him that he doesn't have to be the rowdy, bad boy he acts out as to get his father to look at him.
And then a hug, A protective hug, a gentle hug, a real hug and Thee loves Tan in a way that never wavers and Tan is discovering what it means to be loved by someone who sees him better than he's ever seen himself and it's like watching an empty vessel have water poured in, expecting it all to leak out, only to realize that the cracks have been sealed with gold by a master craftsman who has always loved this vessel and wants it to be beautiful.
(Next week is about sacrifice, it's about what they will have to give up to have a chance at love and what you can't give up to have love and Thee might have given Tan a respite from his father's abuse but he is still the only one who can rescue him truly and he can only be rescued by the truth.)
Tanthai and Thee across the episode, slowly finding their own balance and affection and love from where it's been buried under Tanthai's desperate seeking of his father's attention and the act he put on to make sure he wasn't forgotten. But now Thee has shown him that he is seen.
They are being unbelievably cute but, in all honesty, I need Tanthai's breakdown and not just his cute era.
Oh, yes, money. This is absolutely about saving him money and not anything else. Nothing else at all. There is no other possible motive for this.
I love Tanthai so much.
Only one bed, only one bed, only one bed. @absolutebl I love when this trope isn't just used but is set up in the most deliberate way possible.
My heart hasn't been ripped out the way Laws of Attraction did in ages.
Between the Senator realizing that he could destroy what remained of his son by destroying the one person who loved and Charn admitting that he still loved Tinn but was going to leave him anyway for his own protection... agony.
And we know that Tanthai is going to leave to try to protect Thee from his father.
It's the parallels. It's Charn choosing to leave to protect Tinn and to do the right thing and to finally return to a version of justice as close to the old him as he can and it's Tanthai leaving because it is the only way he can protect Thee, the only thing he can do is surrender to what is asked of him to try to keep the person he loves safe.
They are both leaving the person they love to protect them because they don't see any way for their love and them together to survive the threats that they face and they would rather go into danger alone because they don't know any other way to be.
It hurts so much.
(When he said that he had finally figured out how to get Tanthai to surrender and it was through Thee... he might as well have ripped my heart out and handed it back to me, still beating, and laughed.
Just two working class guys taking out an entire group of elite bodyguards for the chance to rescue their deeply traumatized, hurt and self-sacrificing lovers who need them in their lives to keep them safe and give them a chance at any light in the future.
That's all.
Not my heart on literal display as they fight for any chance at the future they so desperately want and love.
