/gen question do tapeworms have a purpose in ecosystems? I acknowledge they still have a right to exist if they don’t, but since they’d be harder for other things to ingest I’m curious if you have any thoughts on it
I don't know much about the role of tapeworms specifically, but they interact with so many different organisms in their lifespan, it's pretty safe to say that they do something and probably a lot of things
fun fact the tapeworms that dogs and cats get spend part of their lifetimes inside fleas. the fleas get eaten while the animal is grooming, and thus find their way into the digestive system of the mammal. so you have a parasite that depends on a completely different parasite for existence.
I used to be horrified by endoparasites, but now I feel an odd sense of sympathy with them. Living inside the body of another animal, completely dependent upon it, is such a vulnerable state. The host's immune system is aggressive towards the parasite. Like, imagine living inside the body of your God and your God hates you.
But also, as a tapeworm, you live in an endless feast of your favorite food and you don't have to do anything. and also you don't have a heart or a digestive system because you don't need it.
do you know anything about tapeworms?

TODAY'S FACT IS
Did you know that the Beef Tapeworm (Taenia Saginata) is the largest member of its genus? Typically, they measure from 4m-10m long (already quite the variance), but they have been recorded as long as 22m.
Like other tapeworms, they do not have a digestive system. They have a living sheath around their body called a tegument that they use to suction themselves onto their host's digestive tract, absorbing the nutrients that the host should be getting. The distinguishing factor for this worm compared to others (aside from its size) is that the anchoring end of the tegument called the scolex does not have hooks, only suction cups.

Parasitic whumpers.
The literal kind.
Anything that gets into whumpee's body and brain. Forces reactions they can't control. And can't explain.
Pounding headaches? Intrusive thoughts? Constant exhaustion? Starving yet feeling full?
Parasites.

this is perhaps the most famous gastrointestinal influencer in the media. they are very well known for their redundant living healthy living tips and outrageous food recommendations
every few days they make up a new weight loss/weight gain method and post it on their blog. most of their methods are dangerous and shouldn't be performed at all, but if you're lucky enough you might find one that works really really well. almost too well
