September in Review: Two-Legged Spiders

GHOST Webcomic Review

Ever since I decided to branch out from exclusively covering podcasts on this blog, I ran into a bit of stumbling block when it came to September. September in Review and the whole block of PodCake-and in extension, myself-will always be about the audio drama scene and providing more for artists that want to make a name for themselves.

And though I’ve certainly found my place on the tight rope after all these years, I see that might come with a bit more exploration and experimentation on my part. To have the patience to delve into topics I didn’t originally cover, to look into new websites, new methods of storytelling, maybe even use this space to talk about things I happen to have thoughts on regardless of how well known they might be.

On my to-do list I still have animes to binge, movies to watch, books to finish, and people a little on my level to consult all before I turn 22 in a matter of weeks. 

I want PodCake to be for every artist of every walk of life with my current focal point being of the web comic variety. Specifically one for a game I’ve rambled about on this page at least three times now so maybe I’m not quite pushing out of my comfort zone with this endeavor.

“GHOST” is a fan interpretation of the creation of our favorite blue-skinned sniper French femme fatale Widowmaker, showing a certain duality between her and the woman she once was, Amélie Lacroix. Due to the fact this comic series is only accessible through purchases, I won’t be going into too much detail or providing images that weren’t already made publicly available by the artist. 

As a content creator myself trying to make a quick buck doing my own writing, I owe it to Tesslyn Bergin (whose Tumblr is @artbytesslyn) to respect their wishes and only list the details that she would personally approve of, so expect this review to be spoiler free.

Though I’ve been a fan of Bergin’s work for a little over a year now and do what I can to boost not only this comic but her original story “Facing the Sun” on my blog, the one thing that’s really got me interested in her work is her collection of Widowmaker art. 

And the true embodiment of that Widowmaker fascination is none other than “GHOST” an ongoing Overwatch fancomic that is an artistic retelling of how Widowmaker’s personal conflicts and relations before and after being brainwashed and tortured by the hands of Talon. 

“GHOST” thus far is a haunting mini series which is all the better helped by Bergin’s unique art style. The focus on sharp lines and contrasting colors, the way facial expressions can be portrayed so well due to the focus on cheekbones and hollow stares-it has such a haunting look that just a glance at still images can get you a good read of the tone and vibe.

Tessyln’s work really does exceed with how she portrays the human form, even Widowmaker whose catsuit clad physique and the off and on reappearance of a naked form is never used for titillation. The comic is touchy and uncomfortable yet utterly sexless in execution.

Environments feel lived in and have a nice sense of space and every cover is saddled with symbolism from reaching hands to shadowy masks. I just love the way we can tell something bad is on the horizon by looking around a scene even before the dialogue starts.

A sizable amount of volume two is in black and white, it being mostly told through a flashback, which is a bummer cause I feel the art style really sparks to life with the colors in play. The best volume by far is the latest and easily the most colorful with the bonus of some gorgeous full spreads and the most interesting bits of story development.

It might be my huge bias towards the character Moira O’Deorain coming into play here, but the possibility of her being an active antagonist with a possessive hold of Widowmaker’s creation would make for some great conflict later. Kinda like a Frankenstein’s monster set up but with a prettier monster and a mad scientist I may or may not have a certain admiration for.

It’s stories like this that really put a nice broader scope on some of the darker details of Overwatch’s universe and seeing how fans can understand it in their own special language is part of what makes fandom such a fun ride.

The story is only at three volumes with easier access for Patrons-a money investment I sadly don’t have the time to make-but the purchases on Gumroad to get a good gist of this overarching tale was pretty insightful and an interesting look into a dark, introspective fan fiction.

With the cliffhanger volume three left on, I’m awfully interested in where it has to go from here. “GHOST” thus far is a little creepy, a little uncomfortable, a little depressing in places in what story it has to offer, but in all the ways that make it excellent.
