My tarantula is molting and it scared the shit out of me but I can confirm she is not doing the death curl so wish her luck!
It is only her second molt with me and the first time she molted I had been on vacation, and was very distraught upon returning home and seeing what we thought was my sweet buggy dead.

Learning tiiiime! This is the molt of a very large female Pamphobeteus sp. machala. The highlighted spot is the interior of the abdomen, between the top pair of book lungs.
Before this molt, the tarantula was subadult and not completely grown. She had a bit of a purple sheen to her legs, and the carapace was pink. Another hobbyist informed me, very certainly, that they had raised “hundreds” of this species and could tell I had a male even before the mature molt because of the brighter colors. I was unsure, and they seemed so certain that I was willing to believe they were right.
Here’s the thing, guys: a good majority of tarantula species are NOT visibly dimorphic before the male’s mature molt. Are there some? Yeah, definitely. Can you tell by leg length or color for species not known to be visually dimorphic? No.
This tarantula molted, and she lost the strong purplish and pink tones, turning much more brown as is the calling card of the boring adult females of this genus.
That highlighted portion of the image above is the spermatheca of a female.
Unless the person telling you that your immature tarantula looks male or female when that species is not sexually dimorphic prior to the male’s mature molt is a seasoned, widely-known keeper, don’t believe them until you get proof yourself.

My tarantula molted! Unfortunately she broke it before I could pull it out so I can't preserve it so I just used it to double check her sexing bc her back end was v small after words and it scared me a lil (she is definitely a girl tho according to the molt so that's a relief) I'm gonna try and see if the fangs are stable enough to pull out and preserve those instead of the whole molt. I'll be uploading a pic of this fresh new baby tomorrow I don't want to bug her rn
