Tasseography (also known as tasseomancy, tassology, or tasseology) is a divination or fortune-telling method that interprets patterns in tea leaves, coffee grounds, or wine sediments. The terms derive from the French word tasse (cup), which in turn derives from the Arabic loan-word into French tassa, and the Greek suffixes -graph (writing), -logy (study of), and -mancy (divination).

Tasseomancy (from French “tasse” meaning “cup,” from Arabic “tassa,” and Greek “manteia” meaning “divination.”)

   n. A form of divination using tea leaves, or sometimes coffee grounds. The process involves drinking tea made from loose tea leaves, and then interpreting the positions and shapes of the leaves after the tea has been consumed. Also called tasseography or tassology.

Recommended steeping instructions:

For a stronger cup, add more tea, not more time! An average measurement is approximately two to three teaspoons of tea per 8oz. of water. Bring the water to almost-boiling; if the water reaches a rolling boil, let it sit and cool before adding the tea leaves.You want to make sure that the tea is not too hot, so as not to burn the leaves (or yourself!).

White: 1-2 minutes

Green: 1-2 minutes

Oolong: 2-3 minutes

Black: 2-4 minutes

Yerba Mate: 3-5 minutes

Rooibos: 3-5 minutes

Herbal: 3-5 minutes

For a more effective reading, use loose leaf tea instead of bagged tea. The tea that comes in bags or sachets are often lower quality leaves, and may be ground into very small pieces. A tasseography can still be done with bagged tea, but you will probably have a better experience with loose leaf tea.

It is suggested to drink the tea using your passive hand. Allow the loose tea leaves to float in the water without a sachet. Take your time, enjoy the tea. As with most divination practices, you can choose to focus on a question or topic, or simply allow the process itself to guide you. When there is approximately less than half a teaspoon of liquid left in the cup, swirl the cup three times, and tip the cup upside-down onto its saucer. The remaining tea should drain from the cup, leaving just the leaves.

When you are ready, flip the cup upright. Your experience may be different than others, so be prepared to interpret symbols and shapes intuitively. Begin from the handle of the cup, and read inward, deosil. The outer rim of the cup typically signifies the past or present, and progresses further into the future the closer you get to the center of the cup. The section closest to the handle usually represents the self or the home. If you are searching for an outcome to a situation you may be experiencing, look toward the center of the cup. Many people infer that tasseomancy can read as far as a fortnight into the future, but this may vary per person.

Let your imagination follow your first impressions of the shapes and symbols you see. Some common images to look for include bubbles, geometric shapes, animals, or tools. Divination is often metaphorical, and reading tea leaves is no different. Tasseomancy has historically been a form of entertainment, but it can be useful in learning more about yourself and how you think. Most importantly, don’t take the reading too seriously, and remember to have fun!

I was busy this weekend and drew lots of pictures in my book. These are only a few pages I did. Once I get my colored pens, there will be some adjustments to be made. There's two more pages on tasseography and they all got done on Sunday, haha. Fun fact: I used a Hershey kiss to trace my moons. I used a plastic easter egg to trace my 5 tea cups. The two big cups are a candy jar lid with a candle for the middle.
