lilac : what was your muse’s childhood like ?? how has their upbringing affected them as they’ve aged ??
rough. soren’s early years were spent just staying alive, hardly spending much time outside his family’s quarters, sickly as he was. his base condition worsened by the months & eventually left him bedridden, & it only seemed to get more & more dire. until, that is, his father used dark magic to heal him. soren was grateful, of course, but seeing his mother begin to distance herself from viren afterwards left him feeling unsure.
he saw his mother’s discomfort, but he could not deny the good his father’s magic had done, & neither could she without leading to arguments of both his parents going in circles of “ you would rather i have let our son die ?? ” “ of course not but there had to be a better way !! ” .
soren decided that he would use his father’s gift of health to become strong, strong as he could be, strong enough to never need his father to use the dark magic that his mother so hated on him. when claudia was revealed to have great affinity for dark magic & viren turned his focus towards her, soren decided that he would ensure all the same for his little sister, for he hated the thought of their mother shutting out claudia like she had their father.
when lissa proclaimed she was leaving their father & moving back to her own family, when she asked her children who they wanted to stay with, soren thought about his baby sister, thought about the delight she found in magic & in studying with their father, thought about how he knew their mother would not have her children part from each other, & firmly decided he would stay with viren. it was only expected when their mother told claudia to stay with soren.
soren took up a wooden sword & watched the soldiers train & hone their skill, & he replicated the training in secret, hiding away behind pillars & upon roofs & balconies. as soon as he was able to officially start sword fighting lessons, he took them up with vigor, quickly proving himself to be a natural with a blade, a prodigy, even. & he was so proud of himself, of being good at something, & his father acknowledged his skill, even with thinly veiled comparisons to magic, but soren could not fault him for it — magic was his father’s craft, just as now the blade was soren’s. & he swore to use his craft to be strong for his family.
even as a child soren knew his father favored the younger of his children, & again he could not fault him for it, as claudia was the one who could do magic, who had the stomach for what dark magic asked of a human, who had the strength that their father praised. & soren was so proud of his sister, of being so smart & so strong, a prodigy in her own right, with magic.
soren learned of how much their father disapproved of failure early on, & he did everything he could to make sure that his sister never fell out of favor with their father. claudia’s blunders were his doing, her misbehaviors were his ideas, her foolish questions were his simple thoughts. his own favor with their father wasn’t as important, even if soren coveted it as much as for claudia to remain the apple of viren’s eye ( it was no less than she deserved ) .
soren sought favor with his swordsmanship, with his courage, with studying all there was to battle. & he was rewarded for his efforts at 16, assigned position as a member of the crown guard. & he swore to use his strength for the royal line, for katolis, just as his father & sister used their strength for katolis, for humanity.
as a soldier, even soldier - in - training, most of his time was spent with the other soldiers, training with them, eating with them, learning from them, sharing stories, though soren was usually the one listening as the soldiers had told some tales so many times that their companions could recite them in their sleep & the soldiers were glad for new blood in their midst to hear their stories for the first time. he came to have great respect for amaya & gren, both from stories others told & from what action he saw them in, finding himself in his free time trying to learn sign language to best communicate with the general, from time to time asking the lieutenant for help, if he was available ; when soren learned that the elder prince knew sign, he became soren’s third choice of assistance, right after the library ( with very little disrespect to callum, soren simply didn’t think he was in the position to ask help of a prince with something as supposedly simple as a language ) .
though he learned to not care for his father’s favor through viren’s treachery against the crown, never once did soren learn how to lay down his sword, how to not be a shield. so he continues to wield his blade, continues to stand ready to guard the crown. but he also continues to be proud of his sister, continues to care for her, continues to wish nothing but the best for her. it’s long since been ingrained in him that it is his duty to protect claudia, be it from sadness, from scorn, from their father, from katolis.
