Atrata and Taunes from Mabinogi WARNING THIS POST CONTAINS FEELS...oh and spoilers~! Let's start with the basics, Atrata is the only elf other than Maike (but let's be honest he doesn't have a reason and ugh it bugs me to hell honestly because he was introduced to the series way after Atrata!) who has black hair. In fact it's impossible for any other elves to have black hair (it's actually not an option during character creation either) let's also remember that a group of elves tried to KILL her because she had black hair, an omen of doom among the elves. Castanea the leader of the elven race however spared her life, and wiped her memory of this even. However the memory is still accessible through the memory mirror. However Atrata cracks it due to her lack of courage when facing her past. I feel bad for her, she went through so much as it is but she had to relive it for you. Okay okay so you're wondering about Taunes right? Well for those who don't know about Mabinogi let me fill you in, think of Romeo and Juliet actually don't those are for another Memorable Characters. But same concept, Taunes is a Giant. The Elves and Giants have been at war pretty much since the dawn of time. Wondering what side I'm on? Elves. But I love the Giants so much I just have to many Elven friends Q.Q I'm sorry Giants!!! Anyhow. Atrata finds Taunes out in Longa Desert, a desert not far from the Elven town Filia. She, rather than killing him, heals his wounds and helps him (reference the middle picture) the two then fell in love, which of course is forbidden given their race and all. Let's skip ahead to the 8th Generation questline, Krug the leader of the Giants orders Taunes to lead another assault on the Elves. Taunes refuses saying that because his vision is so poor he is almost blind and cannot battle. Krug has him arrested for his disobedience, and it's at this point that Atrata sends Taunes a letter. Wait, how can he read if he's so blind? Screw it feelsy part coming right up. Later on Crumena, the evil dragon. Tries to force Atrata to summon Adniel, the dragon who helps you through most of G8. Hope this is still making sense. Taunes escapes and goes to find Atrata. When he arrives Crumena decides to kill him, mocking his poor eyesight accusing him of being completely blind. It's at this point that Atrata throws her bell in front of Crumena, which Taunes can hear. With this he is able to kill Crumena, yes the forbidden couple said to be a bad omen in so many ways, the two who had their own people turn on them...those two are the ones who team up to take down this badass dragon who no one, not even the main character could lay a finger on. BECAUSE LOVE THAT'S WHY! In the end of it all though the two are separated because their love is in fact forbidden. The two never get to see each other. Not even during Saga when the Elves and Giants team up. But in the end Taunes was able to protect Atrata and repay his debt to her for saving his life, despite his poor eyesight. (Oh no it's raining again...somehow even though I'm in my room...stupid in-doors rain!) These two are my favorite Elf and Giant characters and their story has stuck with me for the years I've played this game. Despite his bad eyesight Taunes is the only blacksmith I go to for all my Elven weapons. Because it must be nice to see an Elven bow and be reminded of the one he loves. Seriously Romeo and Juliet got nothing on these two! Well that's just my two gold pieces on this one, if you've got anything to add please feel free to hit that little reblog button there.
