Um.  I kind of wish I had the attention span to be more involved in my various fandoms?  Especially the Descendants fandom.

Can I have a compliment?

You were the first person to have any long-term interaction with me on Tumblr. The only one for quite a while. I was originally planning to stay on the fringe of LW Tumblr and bask in the light and be unworthy and reblog a bunch of crap tagged “notice me senpai”. You made me feel like I was part of the actual community, and I appreciate that a lot.

You have also been good at making me feel good. You’ve been doing it for quite a while and have never stopped and that’s great. I am always happy when I get the opportunity to do the same for you.

You know things. Lots of things. Even cooler is the fact that you want to teach me these many things. Especially CS things that may get me a job. You have unfailingly supported me emigrating and making that sweet CS moola since day one. That rocks.

You host a good party. Not only is it a delight to spend time with you, but also to spend time with your friends. You are, thus, directly responsible for a great degree of my internet social life. You are also indirectly responsible for pretty much all of it by having made me willing to acquire one. Right now, Tumblr and its inhabitance are the only thing keeping me sane, and are also responsible for my hope for the future. Thank you, Taymon, for saving my life.

FYI, Yudkowsky has said that that bit in TWC was a trial balloon: he was interested in writing a story about a future with vastly different norms about bodily autonomy and sex, but first wanted to see whether the audience would accept the premise. Seems he got the information he wanted, since he never wrote that story. He also felt it important for a future human civilization to be shown to have norms that we'd consider evil, since it would be unrealistic not to after 500 years of values drift.

See, I had either forgotten or not read this bit, and I regard this as tragic. I think if TWC had internal consistency on these issues and tackled them properly, it would not have got the response that caused him to decide not to go ahead and tackle those things properly. 

I think what it comes down to is the fact that a) you can’t half-ass some topics and b) stuff that is in your fiction should serve the purposes of that fiction, not some other hypothetical fiction.
