Violent pro Russian hate groups just stormed the premises of Pride Festival that was supposed to close Pride Week in Tbilisi. The organizers had to be evacuated. Everyone is fine.

It's just heartbreaking to see this happen again and again. Police 'failed' to keep them out because current pro Russian government has been doing the damnest with church together to use queer people for their political games and homophobia to gain more supporters. I have been at this festival years ago and it was the most supportive and loving space I have been in, I have so many fond memories from it.

I was going to be there this year too, as were my queer friends. Now all of us are sad because once again we had to face the harsh reality that queer people aren't protected here. And worse - the government will actively orcherstrate violence like this to further separate Georgia from Europe and European human values because that is what Russia wants.

Very shortly: the ultra nationalist and religious groups came out in the streets protesting tbilisi pride, since lgbt community didn't feel safe to come out in the streets, the only target for them were journalists and reporters. Currently 55 of media representatives are in hospitals due to the injuries.

Today, July 5th was supposed to mark the end of Pride Week in Georgia with a Pride March in the capital Tbilisi.

Homophobic Pro Putin forces and religious groups lead by Georgian Orthodox church have been making threats for the entire week that they wouldn't allow it. Today morning these hate groups stormed the offices of Tbilisi Pride and the Shame Movement, they also physically assaulted journalists and peaceful civilians. The government and police won't do anything about it. Tbilisi Pride had to cancel today's march to avoid further escalation and violence.

The camera man who got beaten up by the Alt Right Putinist forces & priests from the Orthodox church when on his job on the 5th of July as these animals were trashing offices of Tbilisi Pride and The Shame Movement, died from head injuries today. 20 people were beating him for 15 minutes, TWENTY!!!! I feel absolutely hopeless and helpless in this country. The pro Russian government will oc do nothing, just the way they never provided enough protection or reinforcement for journalists and peaceful civilians during Pride in the first place. All I can do is cry 😭

But as she prepared the grounds on the morning of the festival in July, as many as 2,000 protesters were already gathering at the outskirts of the park. Waving Georgian flags and chanting “Glory to Russia,” the protesters—almost all men and many wearing the black T-shirts of the conservative media outlet Alt-Info—pushed against lines of policemen. Officers who had assured Subeliani that they would defend the event now came to her with a question: How many people did she have working? “In two or three minutes, they started, ‘Evacuation!’ And we heard this screaming of the people and throwing stuff,” said Subeliani. Before she could protest, the police officers began running across the field, ushering organizers, volunteers, and artists into waiting mini-buses. “They didn’t give us any choice,” Subeliani said. “I immediately understood what happened.” After evacuating, Tbilisi Pride organizers quickly responded on social media. “The attack on LGBTQ+ activists and Pride Fest was a well-planned operation orchestrated jointly by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and ‘Alt-Info’ against human rights and democracy,” they wrote on Facebook, referring to Georgia’s national law enforcement agency and the conservative Georgian TV outlet.
