Practiced Sonatine I. Modere by Maurice Ravel on IG Live. It’s good to practice playing stuff in front of people because it forces us to understand what happens when we play in front of people and how it changes the way we feel about our playing and what we remember and forget. Tomorrow I’ll do the second movement, and the next day the 3rd movement... then I’ll try to do the whole tune. This was a doozy! Ran 39 pages long & time ran out just before I finished! Sonata (#23) in F Minor op 57. Czerny himself, a student of Beethoven, said “this was the best sonata ever.... until Opus 106, then THAT was the best one ever.” Also this was dedicated to a count Frans Brunzvik. Beethoven was in love with the count’s sister but she only married royalty 🧐🤬. Sorry, brother. Almost done with 3/4 of Beethoven’s sonatas. I may not have time for book IV. Played the C Major Grande Sonata From Opus 53. I had my own story on this one— I ripped a page clear in half and had to stop the session to tape it up. Oops. It wouldn’t be good to rip my own charts considering the fact that it took me weeks to make them. Played the G Minor and Major Sonatas from the Op. 49 set— these weren’t supposed to be published but Beethoven’s brother published them behind his back. JERK. The nice thing about IG Live is that it disappears after a day... it’s great for logging in some reading time. I’m working on a new release, and being out on the spot every day with music I’ve never seen is a great challenge, which helps with both learning new tunes and even improvising. There’s 4 sonatas left and they are promising to be challenges. When this book is finished I’ll make an attempt at the full Ravel Sonatine, possibly on Sunday (just started learning last weekend). So, tune in around 8 each night, through Sunday.
