“You do not mean that,” Kori told Vic. “I know you know it was a good thing.”

“It was a good thing,” said Raven. “But it was. It’s in the past. We tried to change things, and we had some successes, and ultimately failed. We just have to deal with that.”

“We didn’t try that hard,” Dick said quietly. He looked up at his friends; he hadn’t decided if he wanted them to hear that, but they already had.

“What?” Raven’s voice sounded small.

Dick hesitated. Could he really say it? Was he even right? “We didn’t take every mission seriously. We didn’t take everyone who came to us seriously.”

But when he touched her wrist, she was immobile quiet rage. She didn’t stop staring at the paper.

“And you say Terra wrote this?” she asked Dick in a low voice.

“That’s what Jenny said,” Dick answered.

Kori balled up the paper and chucked it aside, which enough force that it went into a fallen trashcan and set it upright again. “If Terra wrote this… the whole time we thought she was with us, she hated us in secret. She was no friend.”

Azar looked up from when she was sitting on his couch, an untouched cup of tea before her. “Hello, Gar.”

Gar thought she seemed calm as always, but that she looked different somehow. More material, more here, not so other-worldly. Not so ageless. He thought maybe it was her way of looking worried. He walked into the living room. “Hi. What’s up?”

“I was hoping you would know where Raven was.”

“Raven?” Gar felt awake for the first time in days. It was almost a sweet feeling—to have his brain forced to think about something other than Terra. It was a relief. “What do you mean? When was the last time you saw her?”

“Two days ago. Your mother told me what happened to all of you. But Raven never came back in the morning like you did.”

Guilt gnawed at Gar. He’d assumed all his friends were okay… How could he not have checked? And what were the others doing?

“So she’s at the dance? You mean…” said Vic.

“We’re doing the mission. Dick and Kori are doing prom,” Raven confirmed.

“Man, that’s so unfair!” Gar said as they moved up the hallway. “Dick didn’t want to give me a pass for prom but Kori gets to go?”

Raven turned to him. “What?” she demanded.

“I asked Dick to get me and Terra into prom, but he said he didn’t wanna owe Kitty anything,” Gar elaborated.

Raven frowned at him and Terra both. “So you were also gonna leave us alone to find this bomb?” she rejoined, with a sudden forcefulness in her voice that Gar ascribed to being on edge from her afternoon at the mall.

“Stink bomb,” Vic said through gritted teeth, “say stink bomb. That way if someone hears us, there won’t be instant panic.”

“I think she’s made it pretty clear that she does prefer to be alone,” said Raven. “If not back when she first walked out on us, then at every single turn when you’ve asked her to hang out and she’s said no.” She punctuated her words by stabbing her fork into her salad.

“Look, I regret showing Terra the score,” said Dick. “I wish I hadn’t. But Raven’s right. She’s made her decision. We can’t force someone to be our friend.”

“I’m not trying to force her to anything,” Gar stated, looking at his friends with a seriousness he didn’t usually adopt. “But did all of us become friends immediately? No,” he answered himself. The others looked to each other, recognizing the truth in that. “So I’m not giving up,” Gar finished, and buckled down on eating his lunch in the last minutes he had left in his lunch hour.

“Raven’s in a cult?” Jen repeated when Terra told her as much. She didn’t look pleased. “That was already a rumor way back in freshman year. You’re gonna have to do better than that.”

“But what I’m telling you,” Terra argued, “is that it’s true.”

“Then get proof,” said Jen. “Otherwise it’ll look like we’re reaching.”

“Gar said the name was Azarath, but I couldn’t find anything online,” said Terra.

“Get pictures of the inside.”

“She’s never let me in her house.”

“Get her to let you,” Jenny replied in a sing-song voice.

As much as Terra was disappointed her intel was rejected, she couldn’t resent Jen for it. Terra wanted to sink Raven most of all; if Jen said it wasn’t perfect, Terra would seek perfect.

Terra started to explain rapidly. “Jen a-and Kitty Moth have been… helping me. Kitty’s dad had Blood change my grades and delete all the strikes off my record. And then… I owed them. So…”

“You sold us out… for a higher GPA?”

“For security!” she returned, her eyes pleading. “For control of my own life! For a clean slate!”
