Naptime has been shortened by a good half hour by an inopportune fire alarm, so we in the toddler room decide to get up and have snack, as today is one little girl’s birthday. One boy is still upset by the upheaval caused by the alarm, and will not stop crying no matter who says what to him, even when all the kids are seated at the table with the imminent prospect of cupcakes. I simply can’t resist.

Me: [Kid’s Name], this is not your party, and you may not cry if you want to.

Silence from the other two teachers.

Me: Oh, come on, you guys, that was funny!
