genuine question as a teacher
how do you deal with a situation where a student has abusive homophobic parents but there's a health concern related to their body transitioning. using with abusive situations, i try my best to just not call home (unless in a situation where i am legally obligated) and work with the student directly.
i've called CPS before which i never heard the results of but i can imagine it gets worse before it gets better. one of those parents ended up calling the school and screaming at admin.
as someone who came from an abusive household, i understand there are things students don't want parents to know, and as long as it doesn't directly affect the safety of other students, i'm usually open to not calling home or giving extra help/chances to redo assignments.
but the situation i was stuck in was a trans student going on t. their parents were not supportive of the transition. i'm not sure how they got on t but that's besides the point. these were facts known to all adults who worked with him. this student fainted in my classroom; collapsed in front of me. a minute later, he woke up, appearing to be completely fine, and begged me not to call home. he told me it was a reaction to the t. i had to tell him that i was required to call home and it was out of my hands, which was really difficult for him to accept and he dreaded going home that day. i felt terrible but i truly didn't know what to do.
was there anything else i could have done to help my student? i am not medically trained in any way beyond reactive care to asthma, seizures, and anaphylactic shock. i am also legally bound to report certain situations, especially regarding health and safety of students.
