Hey, y'all! Random teaching thought inspired by @hyperlexichypatia and youthlib in general:
I've recently been talking to my students about why literacy matters, and I realized quickly that the best way to get them to care about reading is to explain how not being able to read makes a person much more vulnerable to being tricked.
Then, I talked with them about how powerless they feel at school and then had a discussion about how they could use literacy to take back some of their power at school. It was exceptionally cool, and I almost cried when one of these kids used their literacy skills to argue their way out of participating in a class activity they didn't want to do 🥰
I'm such a messy teacher, because I both teach them to be as ungovernable as possible and then also try to teach them why some rules should be followed not because you always feel like it but because it's the right thing to do (e.g., solving conflicts without violence, trying again after a failure, etc.)
