It is so wild to live in a world where the only consequences given in school for bad behavior are against the teachers who are trying to get the students to act right.

I know I've talked about this volatile kid before that has hit a teacher, flipped off countless teachers and students, told a 9-year-old girl to suck his dick Etc he does nothing in my class at all. He will not work he will not sit down he will not listen he literally does whatever he wants to. The aid that is working in there is afraid he is going to hit her if she tries to make him work or ask him or yell at him or whatever. Any faces no consequences at all. He hasn't learned one single thing in my class because he either just walks out or if we call Administration they let him go to the office and run errands for them which is a reward not a punishment.

Today I got in trouble for putting a comment on his report card that said I cannot control him and the aid is afraid of him period I was told that was not professional Period So basically they just wanted to lie to the parents Which I see no value in whatsoever Period.

Everyday I go in wondering am I going to get beat up?

Am I going to get stabbed or shot?

Am I going to have to witness this happening to one of my friends and colleagues?

But hey, as long as the parents are happy, who gives a f*** about the teachers, right?

Words of wisdom for new teachers.

"Fake it 'til you make it. "

Whether you're a brand new teacher just out of college, new to a country, school, or even grade level it can be intimidating to get started. After all, you're expected by those little people in your classroom to be in complete control and be knowledgeable about everything, even though, just as the kids are learning about you, you're learning about them. When they're not in the room you can panic, ask for help, support from the team or admin, but while they're there, they trust you know what you're doing even though that couldn't be further from the truth. So you gotta fake it, act like you know exactly how kids their age think, act like the little surprises that happen in the day or in your lesson are completely planned out and on purpose, act like you are the the most skilled and resourceful person you know, instead of the frazzled mess you feel like inside. Eventually the act will become the truth as you learn your kids, feel more comfortable in your position and your curriculum, and get to know the inner workings of the school itself. If you do it well the kids won't know the difference and will have more confidence in you as you build more confidence in yourself.

👩🏼: I always wanted to have my ducks in a row, but I’ve never been able to do that. I’m starting to think I don’t have ducks. You know what I have? Hedgehogs! That’s what I have. I have hedgehogs. Some of them are walking along, but they’re definitely not in a row. They’re kind of sloloming. I think most of them are curled up in balls just rolling around. Some of them roll away never to be seen again. Some of them may return hours or days later and have become irrelevant!

The next day...

👦🏼: Mrs. Amy?

👩🏼: Hold on one minute dear. I’m trying to get my thoughts together.

👦🏼: You mean you’re getting your hedgehogs in a line?

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean! I’m grateful to have students that “get” me and accept me for the tornado of chaos that I am.

Misadventures in Teaching a Week in Review 🍎

This week, I learned I really need to stop talking to myself because these kids pick up on way too much.

🧔🏻: If you were an animal, what animal would you be?

👦🏼: I don’t know, but Mrs. Amy would be a horse because they can fall asleep standing up, and when they let their bellies out, no one judges them.

👩🏼: All the things I teach you in a day, and that’s what you remember?!

👦🏼: Yes.

👩🏼: *drops something*

👩🏼 & 👦🏼 in unison: Great heavens!

👦🏼: I knew you were going to say that.

👩🏼: How?

👦🏼: Because you always say it when you drop or lose something and you do that a lot.

🧑🏻‍🦱: Mrs. Amy, I imagine the inside of your head is a nice, beautiful place where everything is made of coffee, and kids never throw up on you.

👩🏼: I mean... technically, you’re not wrong.

If you want to learn more about yourself than you ever cared to, I highly recommend working with children 🤦🏼‍♀️
