There's a terrorist attack on your workplace! As you rally to the defense, how do you arm yourself?
we all carry guns, one way or another this will be over quick
there are enough knives in the kitchen to arm everyone

dangerous chemicals that we can't "control" but can aim
bet I can turn the paper cutter arm into a machete
given all the fights around here most of us are decent brawlers
the significant workplace hazards can be weaponized as traps
certified heavy machinery operators are basically mech pilots
I've given this some thought and I'd probably go with [tag]
*sigh* I'm probably expected to give my life to protect the kids or some shit
I guess I hope they run out of bullets before they get to me
I'm tired of working in an industry where abuse is normalized and the workers are victim blamed, but I can't afford to leave. Thought I had finally found a job where my manager would back me up against abusive patients... then she turned on me.
Everyone else who was involved or who reviewed it said I was perfectly respectful, prompt, and basically did everything I could for the patient, who threatened me (bc the doctor took too long and he thought this was my fault) and then complained to my managerand the advocate when I assertively told him to not speak to me that way. The union said it was an "open and shut case" that I had not been unprofessional or negligent or done anything wrong whatsoever. So, they couldn't write me up. In fact the union encouraged me to file a protest of assignment due to experiencing workplace violence that was not being properly addressed - but I haven't yet, because I'm quite sure management will find a way to make me regret it.
Then they wrote me up because I said a mild swear about it in a conversation with a coworker on teams. For that, the union said this was a one time offense and should not go into my official employee record, so manager is keeping it in her own files. She said that I need to use a nicer tone of voice - my calm, polite, and sometimes formal way of speaking is, apparently, not good enough. My working as quickly as I can to make sure all my 1000+ patients' needs are met is not good enough. I'm always on time to work. I'm never unkind to anyone even when they're screaming obscenities at me. When I *have* lost my temper with an abusive patient I've told them I'm ending the call or leaving the room and just done that. And I still do my best to make sure they get the right care, because that's my job.
Being threatened, verbally abused, sexually harassed, and sometimes physically assaulted is NOT my job.
Everywhere I've gone, nurse managers have subtly or blatantly endorsed the idea that nurses are to blame for the violence we experience. I've had it happen to me and seen it happen to others over and over again these past 22 years.
I need this job. I have 2 kids and a mortgage. Other industries that I'm qualified for won't cut it. But once my kids are grown, I'm so out of there.
It is so wild to live in a world where the only consequences given in school for bad behavior are against the teachers who are trying to get the students to act right.
I know I've talked about this volatile kid before that has hit a teacher, flipped off countless teachers and students, told a 9-year-old girl to suck his dick Etc he does nothing in my class at all. He will not work he will not sit down he will not listen he literally does whatever he wants to. The aid that is working in there is afraid he is going to hit her if she tries to make him work or ask him or yell at him or whatever. Any faces no consequences at all. He hasn't learned one single thing in my class because he either just walks out or if we call Administration they let him go to the office and run errands for them which is a reward not a punishment.
Today I got in trouble for putting a comment on his report card that said I cannot control him and the aid is afraid of him period I was told that was not professional Period So basically they just wanted to lie to the parents Which I see no value in whatsoever Period.
Everyday I go in wondering am I going to get beat up?
Am I going to get stabbed or shot?
Am I going to have to witness this happening to one of my friends and colleagues?
But hey, as long as the parents are happy, who gives a f*** about the teachers, right?

Slightly more serious post than usual:
Please keep your local library staff dear to your hearts because boy howdy, they put up with so much strange shit every day. Inner city libraries are particularly crazy, violence is not uncommon, and abuse is ridiculously regular.
I had lots of antisocial behaviour at my library today (UK based), mostly by white teenage boys, I also got assaulted (minor assault but still). We’re a pretty big main city library, we can’t afford security, and we’re often short staffed.
Only ONE library member stood up for us. Out of about 60 people on the top floor where the problems were, an aging, white, academic man was the only person to assist in calling out the behaviour taking place. Nobody in the shopping centre outside said anything when the trouble moved out the doors. Nobody going in or out of the library said anything as my colleague, myself, and the one shopping centre security guard got numerous, horrible curse words and homophobic slurs thrown at us. Nobody said anything when one of the nasty little boys laid hands on me. And nobody checked on me afterwards, except for that one library member and the other staff/security guy.
Guys, you live in a community, I really can’t stress this enough. Your library is YOURS. It’s your privilege, it’s your right to information, and it’s YOUR responsibility to help take care of it. That includes the staff and your fellow library goers. I’m sure most folk would leap to the defence of a librarian or retail worker who was being harassed, but today I got absolutely zip from a huge number of potential allies.
Public libraries are moving stories, grand stage plays, with different players and parts every single day. They succeed or fail depending on how well the fluid players work with the permanent actors (library staff), but more importantly how well they work with each other. We are all responsible for safety and kindness in our communities. Sure, I choose to be paid minimum wage and go to my job. I choose to work in an environment with volatile, vulnerable people every day. I choose, despite having many qualifications that would net me higher paying private jobs, to be a public servant. But I don’t deserve or choose to be treated like garbage, and I really expect better from my fellow humans.

The provincial government has amended occupational health and safety provisions to require all employers to develop a violence prevention policy and investigate violent incidents.
The government has given employers until May 17, 2024, to create and implement their policies. Other amendments to the legislation came into force last week.
Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Don Morgan said the amendments, "will ensure we are building a strong culture of workplace health and safety, which is critical to helping reduce workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities."
