How do you make a kid stop crying in 30 seconds? If I see a kid crying, I’m usually crying within 30 seconds, too, so I would really appreciate the cheat code.

So, this relies on three facts about humans (or at least three things I’ve been told are true and have always worked for me):

1.  People cannot cry if they maintain eye contact with another human.

2.  Humans naturally mimic the breathing patterns of those around them.

3.  Carbon dioxide relaxes muscles, which is why people who are hyperventilating breathe into paper bags.

So, when a child is crying, I get down to eye level with them and say “Just breathe.”  While they’re looking at me, I breathe in deeply (not too deeply for the child to manage, remembering that my lungs are bigger), and when they copy (usually the first or second time), I say “Hold it in” and breathe in deeply, holding it in for a few moments at first, then longer, until they’ve stopped crying and are calm.  I only rarely have to repeat, usually when in the course of our “What’s wrong” conversation they start to cry again.  It’s simple but has worked for me literally every time, from lost coats to broken collarbones.
