語言教學法 Teaching Methods (Part 1)

Trying to use a few words to summarize the teaching method to make sure I "get" it. There are 10 of these, I'll put down 5 for now.

Note: Don't expect this to have textbook accuracy, it's for me to prepare my Mandarin teaching certification :)

直接教學法 - The direct method (DM)

Use the target language to teach, no translations, just like how you'd teach a child in their native tongue.

Focus: speaking/listening

文法翻譯法 - The grammar-translation method (GTM)

Like the boring English classes I had at school. Translates to native language.

Focus: reading/writing (vocabulary and grammar)

情境教學法 - Situational Language Teaching (SLT)

Promotes structural syllabus (課程進度表), have stuff like how to book a restaurant, a scenario for students to practice.

Focus: speaking/listening

聽說教學法 - The audiolingual method (ALM)

More guidance than the direct method, gives a structure, uses drills and repetition to form habits.

Focus: speaking/listening

團體語言學習法 - Community Language Learning (CLL)

Students sit in a circle express what they want to learn, the teacher assists like a counselor. Can use native language. I've never seen this done in my life before.

Hello everyone!💜

Since it’s my birthday today I would like to show y’all not only the origins behind me posting history facts, but also where my passionate love for history and dinosaurs comes from!

So when I was a pre-k toddler my parents lived near to Disney World and a couple times a month they would drive out with me to Animal Kingdom and head straight to “The Boneyard Playground”.

Here I would spend hours exploring and messing around however the area isn’t just filled with slides and things to climb on, though there are a lot as you can tell!

My favorite being the Columbian Mammoth that is found in the fossil dig sandbox, where I would enjoy using a brush to brush off the sand off their bones!

Most importantly there are these Boards found in the playground that are full of info on the remains that you can find here, which are accurate for 1998, the year it opened!

Which as a little kid who was both dyslexic and a functioning autistic, I actually enjoyed trying to reading, as I like many other kids that visited the site, I got to physically feel and see the exact bones they were talking about!

These boards I have always hoped to recreate in spirit with their accurate information and providing as many visual images on the fact that I can squeeze into them to help better connect to the facts!

Recently I revisited the site as it’s set to be permanently closed and destroyed later next year, which I highly recommend you go visit if you get a chance!

I hope I have shown the importance for sites like these in educating others, as not everyone learns best through books especially ones with boring writing and / or without colorful pictures!

Yesterday’s classroom exchange:

Me: how many of you have heard of Bob Dylan?

*About 1/2 of the class raises their hands*

Me (to a student eagerly raising their hand): Who is he?

Student (with confidence): That PBS guy from the 70’s who painted stuff.

Me: That would be Bob Ross, but you are now my favorite student.

I then proceeded to tell them how back in the day my two roommates and I would wake and bake, grab our easels, and paint with Bob Ross. We would then compare and critique each other’s work.

I don’t mean to brag, but I believe this is what educators call making the most of a “teaching moment.”

Three cowardly ways to win a duel, which you should never do

1: Causing a 1 turn takedown with burn damage, it's very cowardly and it makes people very angry, it is why Yugioh keeps banning cards during the tournament

2: Milling your opponent's deck, making sure they lose by default

3: Wiping the field with Evenly Matched, it makes people angry and it has been used too many times in Yugioh Master Duel

If you want a better duel so everyone will happy then stop using those three things I told earlier, because it not only makes you a bully, it makes you a coward

Saw a post about learning new things daily and not blaming your school system or teachers, etc., and that's fair, though also to be fair, there are certainly teachers who are better at killing student interest than inspiring it.

My German teacher in high school was actually pretty good at inspiring students; he had a number of slackers in his class (for four years as an elective!) and one year the district finally sent new dictionaries. Teacher says, "Now, I'm not going to teach you how to swear in German...but I will note that if they really didn't want you to learn how, they should have picked a different dictionary." Cue the rush to grab dictionaries.

Gotta know your audience, maybe.

College/university students, what amount of contact teaching would you prefer?

Similar to lower school levels (several hours per day, every weekday)

One or two lectures, seminars, group teaching, practical classes, etc. per day
