Reason why I love Chaol & Celaena
#3145926 (before something inevitably ruins it & I never ship it again or have a reason to post; because this is my first time reading the series & Crown of Midnight is going wayyy too well for everyone to be this happy for 6 more books😅😂I have hope but also fear🤣):
They would never be normal… but they could be happy.
The way they talk about ‘she was not a normal girl & he was not a normal boy’ neither of them have ever known such a thing. Yet, often it’s all they want, truly. And still among all the things they could never be. All these open wounds between them… a daughter of Terrasen, a son of Adarland. All these impossibilities, and tragedies surrounding them… And yet in the moments together they do have them… they make space (even if it’s just make-believe) to have normal, beautiful things. They have an ease with each other, a simple understanding.
He dances with her & she twirls around in a uniform like her cape is a ballgown.
They stay up too late catching up on paperwork. Talking about everything and nothing on that old ratty couch. Just to sneak off and steal late night desserts for each other like little kids.
He waits for her on her worst days, quiet and understood (no senseless words to needlessly fill space). There just to hold her, to bring her food (& of course chocolate). And she gets to be held, for a moment the brave fearless assassin with a tortured soul gets to be a vulnerable hurting human, leaning on someone else. — Someone, something, steady.
She throws him a birthday party: knows what would mean something to him, fills it with his favorite things; his favorite meal; adds hazelnut to the chocolate cake just for him. He gets to have a birthday party, be cherished, be cared for by someone else for once; no longer the one watching every celebration & meal from the side lines (the captain of the guard, the forgotten son) just a boy smiling & laughing with a girl. — A friend, a love that knows.
They are each others hand to reach for in the midst of hell. A future to dream, to run for… A foundation to build upon, steps towards it; even while counting down days within the practical prison of glass & games with cruel kings; an escape. And a day to day, daily routines & a familiar face to survive by in a world of upheaval and unknown. A promise to do more than survive, to live once more… Perhaps never normal but happier nonetheless.
