“URRRGH!” The sound comes from deep within your chest. If a sound can perfectly encapsulate a feeling, it’s this. It feels freeing to let it out, so you do it again, feel it vibrate in your throat.
The door creaks open. Shūgo peeks his head through.
“Are you okay, baby?” He asks and you shake your head. At that, he pushes the door open and steps inside your office. The loose sweats and his favorite graphic Tee make him look comfy and at ease, a stark difference to your office attire. It’s a Sunday, but an important work meeting has had you holed up in your office instead of your husband’s arms.
“Do you wanna take a break?” He asks, settling on the corner of your desk. It looks a little ridiculous, how he’s perched there, only one asscheek fitting onto the tiny corner. You’re pretty sure he’s doing it to make you smile, a reminder of when you put the office together and he kept climbing onto your desk in ridiculous outfits, trying to get your attention.
“Absolutely, but I still need to fix this mess. The supplier isn’t answering any calls, IT has no clue where the bug is located and I have no clue what I can do, just that I have to fix this, and-”
“Baby,” Shūgo interrupts you gently, his large hands cupping your face. “You need a break. Come, have a cup of coffee with me. We can strategize together.”
“What I need…” you huff, frustration still simmering in your veins, “... is a different job. Something easy, where I don’t need my brain. Something like your job.”
Hurt flashes over his face. You regret your words even before they leave your mouth, but they still slip out.
It used to be a funny joke at the beginning of your relationship, but after a particularly awful loss, Shūgo had confided in you that he no longer found it funny. It’s not an easy job to be a pro athlete, even less when you’re the Captain and everyone sees you as the one responsible for losing a game.
You’d understood it then, but somehow, after years of not even thinking about it, the words still have a mind of their own.
“I’m sorry,” you rush to say just as he opens his mouth. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“How did you mean it?” Shūgo asks. The tone of his voice tells you exactly how hurt he really is. But he’s still the man you married, the man you fell in love with, who never fails to hear you out.
You sigh and close your Laptop with a click. You need to focus on your husband for this.
“When you tell me about the Shenanigans you get in at work it feels like you’ve got a whole crew having your back. It seems like there’s nothing you can do that would make them lose faith in you while my team just waits for me to make a mistake.”
His right hand reaches out and you lean into it, letting the warmth seep into your skin. His eyes are open and vulnerable.
“You make it look so easy, Shūgo.”
“It’s not.”
“I know.” You get out of your chair and step a little closer, in between his legs until your face is pressed against his broad chest. He wraps his arms around you like it’s second nature. Maybe it is. “I wouldn’t survive a day in your job. And I don’t just mean the physical aspect of it. Bokuto’s the only one who listens to me.”
“Ah, I think you could convince Sakusa too. Miya, on the other hand, would be too much of a drama queen for you.”
“I agree.” You nod into his chest. “Can you forgive me for my stupid comment?”
“I can,” he presses a kiss to your temple. “If you promise not to do it again.”
“I’ll do my very best,” you reach out your hand and lift your pinky. “Pinky promise. It slipped out on accident, but I want to do better.”
His pinky links with yours. His other arm slips under your ass.
Before you know it, you’re airborne.
“What are you doing?” You ask, unable to keep from giggling when he moves the two of you toward the doorway.
“Getting you a break. We’re going to discuss that problem at work. I’m sure there’s a solution we can try.”
You don’t argue against it. Instead, you cuddle into his warmth and tell him what you should have said a little earlier.
“I love you.”

This barbecue is nothing to be messed with.
You’re wearing one of Shūgo’s old shirts, one that even he won’t miss. Your fingertips are covered in a sticky, yet delicious sauce and your mouth is filled with tender meat. Shūgo’s grinning from one ear to the other, not even bothering to hide the fact that he’s taking pictures of you looking like a chipmunk.
You swallow and point the gnawed-off bone at him. “I can’t eat all of this alone! Also, what’s the point in me treating you to Barbecue if all you do is take pictures?”
“I can’t help it,” he defends himself, “You’re too cute!”
You lean in for a kiss and he meets you halfway. When you pull away, his mouth is covered in the same delicious sauce and it reminds you of the early days of your relationship when you used to wear bright red lipstick. Now that you’re thinking about it, that did look amazing on you. Maybe you should buy yourself a few.
“Babe?” Shūgo’s voice interrupts your silent shopping, “Your phone is ringing.”
Out of instinct, you move to wipe your hands. The caller ID tells you that it's a work call. For a second, you’re tempted to take it. After all, you should probably hear if your solution worked out.
But then, you put it down and return to your plate of ribs.
“Are you not going to take it?”
“No,” you shake your head and take a bite, “It’s Sunday night and I told everyone I wasn’t going to be available.”
You don’t miss the proud smile on his face. His knee knocks into yours and you smile.
“But let’s go back,” you urge when your heart feels like it can’t handle any more mush, “You were telling me about Bokuto’s new attack when you started playing Paparazzi. What was that about?”
“Oh, well, you know how he likes to do cross spikes? He figured out…”
