Bob-ombs Away!

So after a day of Unity and Maya at AIE I felt like doing a little practice at home to help cement the lessons in my noggin, so i whipped up this guy and and did a quick animation.

SAVE!(and often)

We’re slowly replacing our grey box items with completed, textured models, to recreate Queen Victoria Square in Melbourne for our Mother Duck game.

This was originally going to be a “hero” model, but we decided not do so, as we thought it wouldn’t need as much texel and polygon fidelity as some of our other key objects.

And the reference!

This model took me slightly longer than I would like to admit, I made the foolish mistake of not saving often enough in Maya and paid the price. more soon

More “greyboxing”. Not quite.

Our project is getting underway and we’ve all been allocated roles and responsibilities. One of my main ones being the scene builder, so I began shooting out some level designs trying to create something fun, interesting and suitable for the gameplay that we’ve now been exposed to.

I’m still fiddling with the more minor details even though I’m trying so hard not to,(I even have a hard time looking at a player controller made out of a rectangle and a sphere). I need to remember that this is strictly a grey box, it’s a 3D sketch, something I can just smash out and throw away or change quickly and easily. More tomorrow fiends.

The yellow Dots are where ducks will spawn, the blue/red zones are location the two players will spawn from, and the open area has not yet been finished,

Getting back into Maya

Getting back to my edges, verts and faces felt so good. Did you miss me Maya...cause I missed you!

So we started by making some furniture with some basic shapes, being told not to move any verts or faces but to just scale the shapes. (resisting the urge to sculpt was really, really hard) After we were given a quick run down of some of the tools we were told to make a house...Ta-Da

I’m a little rusty ill be honest but I’m sure it wont be long before I’m back up on the horse. we were then shown how to bring the model into Unity.

Now the fun begins...

UV unwrapping and the plush ‘massacre’ at AIE

Just how many ways are there to ‘skin’ a penguin?

So today we were stepped through the process of UV unwrapping for textures. At the beginning of the class we were introduced to a soft, fluffy, plush penguin. and memories of Pingu came flooding back to me.

Before I even had time to comprehend what was about to happen I saw our teacher pull a rather large pair of scissors from his bag and turn to the class asking ‘how would we unwrap this penguin?’ Taking the scissors to the penguin with an grin he begins to cut the penguin into sections dictated by where the seam lines of the UV would be. Resulting in the picture at the top. while the child in me was crying, it gave me a really good sense of what the whole process was about. making it much easier this time then when i was doing objects seemingly blindly on previous projects. this new knowledge allowed me to texture the lil’ panda you see here.

While not completely 1 to 1 with the demonstration of the penguin it was worth the plushy sacrifice to gain the knowledge of how to UV.
