I'm thinking about going to grad school on the West Coast and UCLA's one of my choices, but I'm the tea-sipping tree hugger type and I hear LA's not so good for bike happy people (highways! highways! as far as the eye can see!). But honestly, I have no clue what LA is like. Could you tell me more about what you love about LA? *chinhands*
Actually, my main mode of transportation is my bike, so I can talk about that! LA's not a great place for biking - for one thing, the roads that aren't labeled as bike-friendly really aren't bike-friendly, and I've had my fair share of close calls. On the other hand, I've been riding around LA for two years and haven't had an accident, and I tend to get around. (So to speak.) So depending on where you live, you could be very happy riding your bike and taking the public transport (which is actually excellent, fuck the haters), although it really is a town that's better to live in with a car than without it.
As for tea-sipping tree hugger types - we have a SHITTON of those here, and welcome more (especially me, since if you drink the tea, then I don't have to). It's not a company town at all - Hollywood's here, but it's such a small part of what LA is as a whole that you don't really have to worry about, IDK, running into celebrities or anything like that. I will say it's a city that has something for anyone who wants to look for it.
