I love using the scrap 2x4s in carpentry to paint on
These are two separate pieces but they also kinda fit too

Hello! I am looking for volunteer opportunities with vets in my area so that I can get the experience to apply to vet tech school. I’m very concerned that I won’t be seen as a desirable candidate being that I’m 26 now and most of my animal handling experience has been with horses. I don’t know how to place IVs or catheters, and I know this is something a vet tech should know. Do you think there’s a chance someone would be interested in letting me volunteer with them despite these things?
gettingvetted here.
None of us are technicians/nurses in this volunteer group, so I asked @fractiousrvt for her input. This is the gist, plus what I know from the clinics where I have worked and volunteered:
You shouldn't need experience to get into tech school, just completed general education credits and pre-requisites like biology, etc. The tech program should offer hands on labs and require work experience during the program (where you will learn animal handling, IV catheter placement, etc) but not before. You are certainly welcome to request to volunteer at a clinic, but volunteers typically don't perform any tasks like animal handling or catheter placement due to liability and legal restrictions.
“But I can’t afford/don’t want to go to college!”
Fun fact: you can still survive life without a bachelor’s degree! You gotta think a little bit outside the box, but it’s not as difficult as every parent makes it seem. There are more options than just this one, but this is a pretty wide topic with lots of opportunities that it deserves its own break down.
Technical/Vocational/Trade School
It’s basically in the name. This is where you go to learn a trade that helps the world and can get you a job for knowing. Some pros of a trade school include:
- Tends to be a lot less expensive than a four year degree
(A lot of high school districts also have a trade school connected to them that you can go to for free! If you haven’t heard of one in your area, check with your school and see if they have one if you’re interested)
- Doesn’t take as much time as four years
I see a lot of trades being learned in about two years, but some can pay you right away as you learn. It depends on what trade you’re learning
- Can pay you a lot
A lot of trades are jobs people usually don’t wanna do or don’t think about doing, like plumbing or working an ultrasound machine. And if you’re willing to do the job, they’re willing to pay pretty good
However, there are some cons to trade work:
- A lot of them tend to be very physically taxing.
Sure, jobs like welding and elevator work can pay a lot, but if you already have chronic pain/are disabled, it might be more than your body can handle. Even able-bodied welders get a lot of pain and problems after working in their field for so long. (I use welding as an example since it’s so popular, but welding isn’t the only trade with this problem.)
- Depending on what trade you want to get into, they may still require you at least get an associate’s degree (two years of college). There’s not much else to say on that one.
However, do some research on what trade you’re interested in! There are so many. I know kids training to work on wrecked cars, and I know kids training to be horse trainers. It’s not all “welding, plumbing, construction”, et cetera.
Look into what trade you’ll exactly be interested in! Don’t just assume there’s only five out there! Look at trade schools in your area, look at tech schools your school might let you transfer to, and overall, do your research!
I'm so glad to be back at school from the winter break. It's my last semester, and i feel like I still have so much to do, but I'm going to do my best!
